Top 5 'Worst' Car Modifications
Poor paint jobs, getting a little too creative with patterns and colours, bad bodykits, and weird wheels – the world of modified cars can be classified into the good, the bad, and the downright ugly.
Remember the Volkswagen Golf advert of about 10 years ago? It proclaimed that “Some things are best left alone” after featuring some pretty appalling attempts at Golf modifications. Although the advert upset some of the Golf GTi community, Volkswagen just might have been on to something. Well modified cars are one thing, but foot long exhausts, spray paint bodywork, and flimsy wings can quite easily turn even the silkiest of purses into a supped up sow’s ear – as you can see in our top 5 worst modified list.

Rally 'Replica'
Lesson number four, don’t try to be something that you’re not. A ‘replica’ is an exact model or copy of something. So why does this ‘Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec Rally Replica’ look like its ‘cage’ has been made from B&Q plastic plumbing pipes? Having said that, the modifier here does seem to be taking health and safety seriously. They have bothered to fit a fire extinguisher and serious looking notices in the back, but it can’t disguise what’s really going down here – at the end of the day, this is a family hatchback… except that you can’t use it if you’ve got a family. - 2Up 11Down 4
Interesting Paint
There are some smartly modified cars about. Look on any car sale site and you’ll find heaps of modified cars for sale, so themarket is definitely still thriving. But a word of warning for those who are about to visit the spray paint fairy…
As we can see from exhibit one above, what might seem really tasteful to you might not be to many other people’s (ok, any other people’s) taste. The car was advertised as having some (some) ‘paintwork of a Red Indian nature’. What were they thinking? Lesson number one, tastefully does it. - 3Up 6Down 2
Bathroom Bodywork
The next little beauty for some comes in the form of a ‘1990 Rolls Royce White Phantom Replica’. A cheeky bodykit? Maybe. A nice set of rims? Could be. Rendering your car or gluing your bath panels to it? A definite no no! This white knight is another car being sold on an auction site recently. Lesson number two: when it comes to modifying your paintwork, invest in professional help (draw your own conclusions!) - 4Up 6Down 3
Unique Design
This 2003 G55 AMG sells itself as having a custom Chameleon (big $$ - really?) ‘absolutely amazing’ paint job. Is this supposed to look like gold? We are not amazed. The moral of lesson number three – all that glitters is not gold. - 5Up 5Down 7
Whacky Races
Now we know this one is a slight caricature of a modified vehicle, but we wanted to demonstrate everything wrong about the ‘wing’. Last but not least on our list is the ridiculously large ‘wings’ on the rear of many modified cars. Now don’t get confused between the wing and the spoiler. We could argue that a spoiler has no actual purpose – does a three inch high spoiler really decrease the slope of the airflow path down the back of the car? Probably not. But at least it doesn’t do any damage to your car. Wish we could say the same about wings!
