We all know that Nolans Batman movies have been great. Many people doubted that Heath Ledger would be a good Joker, but now we look back on his performance as the definitive version of Batmans ultimate nemesis. Is it fair then to doubt Nolan can pull the same trick and suprise us all? Well need to wait and see, but whoever should be able to channel the demure shyness and the raw sexually that Michelle Pfeifer brought to the role in her seminal performance in Batman Returns. A mature actress with emotional range is key for this role in my opinion so heres 5 actresses who could fill the role better than the jumbo-mouthed Hathaway.

    Charlize Theron

    Shes the right age to play a slightly more mature, but still gorgeous version of Selina Kyle. In movies like Monster Charlize has also played roles where her look has been transformed completely. Her metamorphosis from submissive office worker to vicious vigilante could see her look and demenour change completely. With movies like Aeon Flux, Charlize also has the athletic figure and action movie chops to pull off this role. Shes the girls who saves Brandon Flowers by fighting ninjas for crying out loud!

    Kate Beckinsale

    While she made her name in British indie flicks, it was her performance in the schlocky Underworld movies that brough Kate Beckinsale to Hollywood prominence. Shes undeniably gorgeous and shes proved she can pull of the tight fighting costume and brooding super heroine action scenes. Ugly-ing her up for playing Catwomans alter ego will require more than a pair of thick glasses though. (*Another star from Underworld, Mass Effect 2 and Chuck, Yvonne Strahovski, wouldnt be a bad pick either!*)

    Other than her role in Wes Cravens underrated thriller Red Eye, McAdams has had few roles with action scenes. In that particular movie she was fantastic though, combining vulnerability with grit and determination she was even better than the reliable Cillian Murphy who played the antagonist of the piece. Recent roles as a bitchy go-getter in Morning Glory shows she has the sass for the role, but playing Catwoman would push her to exhibit sexiness and danger in way she hasn™t done in her career so far. I would love to see how she could handle such a challenge.

    Where has Kate Winslett gone? She may have come to super-stardom through her wishy-washy performance in Titanic, but it was her off kilter role in Michel Gondry’s Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind that showed what a versatile actress she was. The most far-out suggestion on this list, Winslett would need to train hard for this role and it would be a big ask to expect her to take on a role so different from anything she has ever done. A little older than some on this list, Winslett still looks great and would surely relish a chance to change her public image and play a bad girl for once.

    Noomi Rapace

    In her performance as the eponymous Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Rapace was vulnerable, strong and in one particular leg-crossing scene absolutely terrifying to men. Shes a great actress whos absolutely mesmerising in the film adapations of Stieg Larssons detective novels and commands every scene she is in. During emotionally draining scenes in the first movie we feel her pain, then see her brutal retribution. She is also the stronger character in these stories, the more determined and more vengeful of the two protagonists. She may be less of a polished beauty than others on this list, but none of them can match her convincing performance through such realistic, compulsive and unflinching scenes.

    So thats my list. Maybe Hathaway will be good in the role, I hope she is. For now though, I™m going to dream of how much better some of these ladies would be in this important role and that iconic costume. Prove me wrong Nolan, prove me wrong!

    Not fond of any on the above list. Why not Michelle again? That would get the audience cheering. Alice Krige imho would have made the perfect catwoman. (10 years ago). Anne Hathaway, erk. Poor choice!

    You guys! You guys! Charlize Theron, cool. But, she's not petite. You need petite. Not tall. Although, I like Charlize, more in the role of Wonder Woman. Kate Beckinsale, pretty descent choice. I'm not too interested in her being in that role. But a fair choice. But, we cannot forget that Cat Woman is exotic. That's what cats are. Stealth, smooth. I don't know, dare I say it--how about--wait now--what about, Jada Pinket Smith or Alisa Keys. Now work with me. Hold on. Get this--they are sexy women, and bad butt girls, and rather, well very exotic. Cat shaped eyes to boot. I mean, come on, sexy, is not enough. Exotic, tempting, and alluring, all three. Cool. Just wanted to see where you're head is. Nothing is more interesting than a man who thinks he can't be tempted. That’s batman. These two are more tempting, because they are more than one race, which has an exotic look and an appeal. Or, else, cat woman isn't all that interesting. You see, Cat Woman, can't just be tempting or sexy to herself, others have to see that she is. Charlize and Kate are pretty cute, but cute with the appearance of looking taller, probally than they are. Now Charlize without a doubt can act. But theres something more needed here. Alluring is what they need, and Jada and Alisha have that, plus they can act. So, lets think outside the mold, and the dragon tatoo chick can pass for a dude, so NO.

    I agree with all the choices. Yes, Rachel McAdams may be a bit young, but it would be interesting to see her work the role. I'm sorry that I'm not familiar with Noomi. Kate Beckinsale and Charlize would undoubtedly be incredible, probably tied for my first choices. But if you were going to expand this list to 10, I have some interesting add-ons that would all be ahead of Anne (sorry Anne, you are really fabulous)... Scarlett Johansson (same as Rachel McAdams - but would look killer in the cat suit); Sienna Miller (maybe not subtle enough for the "Selina Kyle" role but again could pull off the G.I. Joe-like Catwoman); Demi Moore (one of Charlie's "devils"); and finally, the cat's meow... Angelina Jolie.

    I do believe that Heath Ledger was across the board a snickered about choice for his role as the Joker as well, until... well, he was THE JOKER. Just saying... Good Luck, Ms. Hathaway.

    Rosmund Pike was the only one I forgot to add that could be good. Some folks keep recommending Mila Kunis but I think she's too small :/

    Yes agree ALL these are better, though Hathaway isn't the WORST choice for the role. Kudos for thinking of Rapace - she could probably be "hot enough" in a role that called for it more.
