Top 500 Musical Groups/Artists of Alltime By   [84 more lists]

Top 500 Rock Bands isn't 100% accurate as this includes solo artists, and though it does not include jazz or blues it does include soul, R&B, Americana, reggae, and classic country (yes, that is somewhat arbitrary, but for whatever reason i listen to blues and jazz differently than the rest, and would be too hard to compare Miles or Ornette or Hooker to, say, Aerosmith). Criteria for my greatest bands of all time list is a combination of recorded albums, live shows I've seen, live recordings I've heard, radio songs, and even overall image/album covers/general coolness or uniqueness. I guess that was a way of trying to explain that the ranking is just a gut feeling. But it's probably about 50% based on "live chops", hence the lower ranking of the Beatles, who quit playing live before the most creative parts of their career. I am very into live shows and live recordings.

Obviously, this list will change over time. I'm adding commentary to items whenever i get a spare minute or something interesting comes to mind about a band, probably 10-20 entries a month.

    “ i hate long plane rides, and i had just gotten back from my honeymoon, in europe a few weeks prior, so i blew off a chance to see the reunion show, figuring there was about a 70% chance of a tour. Almost every band that plays a full length reunion set in a full arena tours afterwards - if they are going to spend all the time to rehearse, put together a production, etc, why not take it on the road and milk it for some big bucks and pampered glory. Might prove to be one of the biggest mistakes of my life. „

    “ PJ are a better-sounding live band now than they have ever been. They are playing widely different sets night after night. Their studio albums have been lacking the massive hooks of their first 3, but still tend to have 2/3 or so really strong songs, songs which grow on you live and you end up digging and turning to like 3 years after the album came out. I really can't say anything negative about Pearl Jam - they were probably my favorite band from 1992-95, and have never really stumbled since. For some reason they went long stretches without playing Los Angeles, though that has finally changed.They also have the distinction of being the most-i-have-ever-spent-on-a-scalped-ticket band, by at least 5X, for the fan club only show (I am a Ten Club member, just got shut out) in Chicago a few days before they headlined Lollapalooza. „

    Obviously you know nothing about rock & roll, kiss has great hooks, great riffs, and have been around for over 30 years selling albums. their music may not win grammy's, (i believe they have one but i am not too sure) but they play great music and put on a great show! You get your money's worth, which is more than most bands.

    This is not my Top 500 but it's not a bad list. A few of these guys, I've never heard of. Somewhere near the top, I would have had to add Chuck Berry, Edgar Winter, Slade, Mott the Hoople and the Guess Who. I don't think any of these guys even made the list. If it had been the Top 505 Bands maybe they would have been on there. Still, good job!

    The Ramones formed in 1974, and their influence can be heard in almost every band since. Punk and Grunge, just to name two movements, would never have happened if the 'Mones hadn't lead the way. This band deserves to be in the top 10, and maybe the top 5, certainly not buried down in 68th place.

    Tool and Radiohead are similar bands but not in there music. If you're gonna put rh that low u gotta put Tool top 50 Technically they r the better band. MJK is simply one of the best Lyricists to ever walk the planet along with his vocal skills, same goes for Danny Carey, maybe a top 5 drummer of all time. P.S. OBVIOUSLY British (radiohead before tool and oasis before nirvana)

      uh, while i don't disagree that the Beatles are magnitudes better than the bands you mention, i don't think twentysomethings are rocking out to those bands either dude. Have you been to an Aerosmith concert? I have. Drunk Divorcees, hitting on any guy under 40. This guy's list isn't exactly brimming with Emo bands. And while many of his choices are, um, interesting, saying that anyone who would make a Top 500 Bands List doesn't read is the stupidest thing I have ever heard.

      Thanks for the kind words - and if I had been of concert-going age to see the Doors OR Jimi, (or for that matter if either of them had not had their careers tragically cut short) I might well have them at numero uno. Another list concept will be to rank the best bands of alltime based on consistency - and in that case the bands that were cut short (Doors, Jimi, Nirvana, Zep) and the rare bands who stayed broken up (The Beatles) will certainly beat out Neil, Dylan, and the Stones

    I came on here and went through all 500 bands for the sole purpose of finding the band you snubbed, Vampire Weekend. Top 50 in my book (at least) and you gave them nothing.

      They're fun to listen to, and they're musically talented and all that (and, um, this list is kind of wrong haha), but they aren't among the best bands of all time... I'm a long time musician, and I know a lot about music, and it's just that they're kind of insubstantial. I didn't see a lot of my favorites on here either.

    Wow, how are The Beatles NOT number 1? Are you crazy? You shouldn't make a list based 50% on "live chops" since that isn't fair to a ton of the bands listed here, especially The Beatles. Maybe you should have named this list the "top 500 bands/artists based on live performances I have seen" because it's not only inaccurate but also very ignorant.

      just to clarify for other readers (not you), when I say "live chops" that doesn't mean that I had to have personally seen the band live- it can come from live recordings / videos etc, though obviously i'm going to be slightly biased towards bands i've actually seen live. Never saw Jimi or the Doors, for example, but have heard and watched many great live performances from them

    you must be a yankee pot head..to have Neil as number one...The Beatles are the Greatest band of all time. I didn't grow up in the 60s either..hell i'm only 18..so don't give me that bullshit excuse. The Beatles are the one's that started it all...they are the best of the best...the fact that they aren't even in your top 5..shows that your taste of music is atrocious...I don't even wanna see your opinion on Movies...I might throw up reading it..
