Be Client FocusedThough you may have the urge to simply copy and paste your resume onto your Linkedin profile, this won't actually create the most effective profile for your potential business partners/clients. It's best to keep your Linkedin profiles client-focused and containing content that focuses on who you can help as well as the results you've already achieved.
Keep it short and sweet, and resist the urge to add every job you've had since you graduated college. The point of Linkedin is to make connections so that you can find clients or business partners. Just remember this when you're creating your optimal Linkedin profile.
Be Careful About Your Connection StrategyLike most social networks, Linkedin's value is in being able to connect with people with whom you may be able to work with on a business opportunity. But be careful about attempting to connect with everyone and anyone who shares similar work interests as you don't want to be seen as a spammer. (And there are many)
Like in life, it's best to have a referral through your trusted colleagues or friends, as you may receive a warmer response than if you'd randomly cold-emailed someone. The best approach is to be balanced with obtaining a high number of connections as well as using the 'trusted friends referral' approach.
Export Your Linkedin ConnectionsDon't you love knowing little tricks that help you increase your efficiency? Well, Linkedin has a great way to export your Linkedin connections into your e-mail account. All you have to do is go to Linkedin.com/connections, select your connections at the bottom of the page, click on 'Export Connections,' and then just choose which e-mail account you'd like to link.
Now, all your connections will now be available in your e-mail which makes connecting even easier.
Use Search to Find Business OpportunitiesThe more specific you are with your search, the more valuable Linkedin will be to your business.
Be sure that you know who you'd like to target and make sure you know their company, job, job title, etc. before searching your network or the entire Linkedin network.
Remember that it's best to be referred through a trusted source, but if you are cold e-mailing a potential business contact, keep your e-mail short and to the point.
And don't forget to save your searches as Linkedin allows you to save 3 searches at a time. To do so, all you have to do is to search for people in the top bar, then click 'save search' on the top right.
Use Multimedia Options On Your Company's PageSometimes it's easier to watch a video than to rifle through a bunch of links. Use this to your advantage especially if you have a good 'Who We Are' or 'How To' video that makes your company's profile stand out.
All you have to do to add a video is to go to your company profile page, click on 'services,' select 'add a product or service', then scroll down to the bottom of the page to step 10. Be sure to completely fill out the category and description for the service/product that you're adding. Currently, you can only use youtube videos, but if your company has an online media presence, that shouldn't be a problem.
