Its population was 5,237 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Abbeville County. Settled by French immigrants, it was named along with the county for the French town of the same name. Abbeville was established by French Hugenots in 1764. In 1910 Abbeville had a population of 4,459. In 1950 Abbeville had a population of 5,395. In 2011, Abbeville High won its fifth South Carolina high school football state championship. It was the first state title in the 1A division.
