Anthony Tommasini

Anthony Tommasini is chief music critic for The New York Times. Tommasini was born in Brooklyn around 1948 and raised on Long Island. He was admitted to Oberlin College's Conservatory of Music, but chose to matriculate at Yale University in order to obtain a broader liberal arts education. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale University in 1970, a Master of Music degree from Yale School of Music, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Boston University in 1982. Tommasini taught music at Emerson College in Boston and led writing workshops at Wesleyan University and Brandeis University. He was denied tenure at Emerson College and turned to music criticism.
