Arlie Russell Hochschild

Arlie Russell Hochschild (born January 15, 1940, Boston, Massachusetts) is a professor emerita of sociology at the University of California, Berkeley. She is the author of several prize-winning books and numerous articles on the balancing acts of modern two-job couples at home and at work. She introduced to the field of sociology the ideas of feeling rules, time bind and emotional labor. The child of diplomats, Hochschild early became fascinated with the boundaries people draw between inner experience and outer appearance.
