Cathedral School in Turku

The Cathedral School in Turku was presumably founded in 1276 for education of boys to become servants of the Church. The schoolhouse was situated in the wall surrounding the Cathedral of Turku. Mikael Agricola was head master of the school 1539-1548. The school later evolved into the Royal Academy of Turku (now the University of Helsinki), founded in 1640. Until 1812 Turku was the administrative centre of Finland. The Royal Academi of Turku was the third university of the Swedish Empire. Katedralskolan i Åbo, the Swedish Gymnasium of Turku, can be seen as the modern successor of the school.
