Charles Augustus Briggs

Charles Augustus Briggs (January 15, 1841 – June 8, 1913), American Presbyterian scholar and theologian, was born in New York City, the son of Alanson Briggs and Sarah Mead Berrian. He was excommunicated from the Presbyterian church over his purported liberal theology regarding the Bible. He was educated at the University of Virginia (1857-1860), graduated at the Union Theological Seminary in 1863, and studied further at the University of Berlin.
