Dexter-Linwood

The Dexter-Linwood area (abbr. D.L.A.) is located on Detroit's Westside and was once known as one of the most dangerous areas on the West Side of the city. This area has been declining since the 12th Street Riot in 1967, and is often regarded as "Uptown" by city residents and officials due to it being above west of the Midtown area of the city. In the 1940s middle-class African Americans began moving into the formerly Jewish neighborhood along Dexter and Linwood Avenue. 12th Street in particular became the center for black life in Detroit in the 1950s and had some of the highest population densities in the United States.
