Fomento is a municipality and city in the Sancti Spíritus Province of Cuba. The municipality is divided into the barrios of Fomento, Güinia de Miranda and Jíquimas. It was founded in 1864. MLB All-Star Kendry Morales was born in Fomento but spent the majority of his formative years in Havana. In 2004, the municipality of Fomento had a population of 33,528. With a total area of 471 km (182 sq mi), it has a population density of 71.2 /km (184 /sq mi). Note: Güinia de Miranda does not belong to the municipality of Fomento. Güinia de Miranda belongs to the province of Villa Clara. It is a very small town and there isn't a whole lot to do but sit, drink coffee and eat.
