In 2010, the Governors of the College, without any consultation with Parents of pupils, the pupils themselves and the Londonderry High School Old Girls Association, decided to 'rebrand' the College, dropping the word Londonderry from the College title. This change was cloaked in secrecy and did not become knowledge for the parents etc until the story was broken by the 'Londonderry Sentinel' in August 2010. This change has upset many people and is believed to be in breach of the 'Foyle and Londonderry College Act 1976.' The reason for this change is believed to be a response of the proposed move of the School site to the East Bank of Londonderry and the building of a new college. With around 35% of the students being Roman Catholic and mainly from the West Bank, the dropping of the word 'Londonderry', hated by Nationalist and Republicans, is thought will be an encouragement for these students to move to the new Waterside based college. The Governors have not thought out their change. Sinn Fein / IRA have sought to have the city named change and are actively planning to spend thousands of pounds of Ratepayers' money in petitioning the Queen to seek a change. This move by the College Governors is music to their ears and they're already quoting this move as 'unionists' not caring about the name.
