Lyrics - terrible Songs - inconsistent (tho they have many, many excellent ones, especially if you don't really think about the lyrics) Albums - mediocre (except for Billy Breathes) Musicianship - phenomenal Live Shows - astonishingly varied yet top quality

Many rock fans have a negative opinion of Phish, founded on some or all of: -hearing a mediocre studio song -their goofy lyrics -their sometimes deodorant-challenged "Phans" -the very name "Phish" -a loathing of hippies in general I understand all these prejudices, and can't say there isn't an element of truth there. But Phish are MONSTER players, pound-for-pound as talented as any band alive. Give the attached "Loving Cup" just 90 seconds or so, ye haters. . . And they also know and respect their rock history. Long before the concept became widespread, when Phish played a Halloween show they would don a "costume" and cover a classic album - often a double. Prior costumes: -The White Album -Quadrophenia -Remain In Light -Loaded August company indeed. In 2009 the costume was "Exile On Main Street", and I was fortunate enough to see it live. Justice was more than done: http://www.ranker.com/list/phish-festival-8-set-by-set-review/clark-benson

Head over to main stage. Find decent spot and park ass on ground. Start to tire as 11pm start time passes. Lights go out. Chords to 'chalkdust torture' commence. Limbs start flying or at least noodling. Sudden slap as beach ball makes contact with face. Phish have arrived. Overall, a STUNNINGLY great set. As good as 1998-era Phish. Everyone sounded in fine form. Killer setlist as well which can be one of my major peeves with Phish as i loathe about 20% of their material. As an added bonus, they didn't take a set break instead playing a solid 3hrs all thru, which was very thoughtful for my 41 year old body that can't rebound like it used to after sipping vodka + for 10 hours...

They're a bunch of tone deaf donkeys.
