Pokrovsk

Pokrovsk (Russian: Покро́вск) is a town in the Sakha Republic, Russia, located on the left bank of the Lena River, 78 kilometers (48 mi) southwest of Yakutsk. Population: 9,495 (2010 Census preliminary results); 10,092 (2002 Census); 9,283 (1989 Census). The M56 Lena highway connecting Yakutsk with towns further south is on the opposite bank of the Lena, passing through the village of Kyordyom. This village is also the current extent of construction of the Amur Yakutsk Mainline, which is expected to reach Yakutsk in around 2013. The town was first founded by the Cossacks in 1682 as the ostrog of Karaulny Mys (Карау́льный Мыс), meaning Watchtower Point. It later became the village (selo) of Pokrovskoye (Покро́вское).
