Port Talbot

Port Talbot ( /pərˈtɔːlbət/ or /pərˈtælbət/) is a village in Neath Port Talbot, Wales. It had a population of 35,633 in 2001. Port Talbot grew out of the original small port and market town of Aberafan (English: Aberavon), which belonged to the medieval Lords of Afan. The area of the parish of Margam lying on the west bank of the lower Afan became industrialised following the establishment of a copperworks in 1770. A dock was opened in 1839 and named for the Talbot family, local landowners who were related to the pioneer photographer, William Henry Fox Talbot.
