The cartoon was created during the silent movie era as a short that was shown before movies. They gained even more popularity when the talkies came around, most notable of these were made by the Walt Disney company and Warner Bros with "Merry Melodies" (which later became "Looney Tunes"). With the invention of the television, cartoons and animated programs finally found a realm in which to flourish.
