Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back

Here is a&nbsp;list of the best Star Wars movies, ranked by fans and critics. Since the premiere of the first&nbsp;Star Wars&nbsp;movie (A New Hope) in 1977, the saga of the Jedi, the Sith, and the Skywalker family have been favorites of movie-goers. Along with the original film, its sequels The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and The Return of the Jedi (1983) are considered some of the <a href="http://www.ranker.com/crowdranked-list/the-best-movies-of-all-time">best movies of all time</a>. The stories follow Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia Organa, Han Solo, and their friends and droids as they battle the evil Sith lords Darth Vader and Darth Sidious - and make some admittedly <a href="https://www.ranker.com/list/dumbest-sw-movie-decisions/jessica-bedewi" target="_blank">dumb decisions</a> along the way.

Sixteen after the release of the initial films, a trilogy of Star Wars prequels were created, beginning with Episode I: The Phantom Menace in 1999. Attack of the Clones was released in 2002, and Revenge of the Sith (2005) was the final film. This set of films followed Anakin Skywalker, Luke&#39;s father, from his youth to his becoming Darth Vader as well as his relationships with wife Padme Amidala, mentor Obi Wan Kenobi, and eventually Emperor Palpatine.

In 2015, a new Star Wars trilogy began with The Force Awakens, directed by J.J. Abrams and starring Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, and Adam Driver.&nbsp;Star Wars anthology movies, like Rogue One and Solo, are also ranked here. Delve into this lore, and you&#39;ll discover&nbsp;Jedi heroes such as Kyle Katarn and fearsome Sith like Darth Malak.&nbsp;

In 2012, Disney acquired Lucasfilm and announced that a whole new trilogy of films and a series of standalone films would go into production. But in order to do this, Disney had to pretty much wipe the Expanded Universe slate clean. The old books, <a href="https://www.ranker.com/list/best-star-wars-audiobooks/ranker-books" target="_blank">audiobooks</a>, comics, and games were relegated to the &quot;Legends&quot; timeline, which consists of stories that are no longer in continuity. Everything Disney has released since then is considered the canon Expanded Universe.&nbsp;

But whether they&#39;re in the old, non-canon timeline or the new one, there are plenty of great characters that make up the Star Wars Expanded Universe. Luke Skywalker

Luke Skywalker is a fictional character appearing as the central protagonist of the original film trilogy and as a minor character in the prequel trilogy of the Star Wars universe created by George Lucas. The character, portrayed by Mark Hamill, is an important figure in the Rebel Alliance's struggle against the Galactic Empire, he is the twin brother of Rebellion leader Princess Leia Organa of Alderaan, a friend of mercenary Han Solo, an apprentice to Jedi Master Obi-Wan "Ben" Kenobi, and the son of fallen Jedi Darth Vader and Queen of Naboo/Republic Senator Padmé Amidala. The Expanded Universe depicts him as a powerful Jedi Master and eventually the Grand Master of the New Jedi Order, the father of Ben Skywalker, the maternal uncle of Jacen Solo, and the ancestor of Cade Skywalker.
In 2008, the character was selected by Empire magazine as the 54th greatest movie character of all time. On their list of the 100 Greatest Fictional Characters, Fandomania.com ranked Luke at number 14. He will be portrayed in Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, which is planned to be released in December, 2015.

Han Solo

Han Solo is a character in the original trilogy and sequel trilogy of the Star Wars universe. He is portrayed by Harrison Ford. He and his co-pilot, Chewbacca, become involved in the Rebel Alliance which opposes the Galactic Empire. During the course of the Star Wars story, he becomes a chief figure in the Alliance and succeeding galactic governments. Star Wars creator George Lucas described the character as "a loner who realizes the importance of being part of a group and helping for the common good".

R2-D2

R2-D2 is a fictional character in the Star Wars universe created by George Lucas. An astromech droid, R2-D2 is a major character in all Star Wars films. Along with his protocol droid companion C-3PO, he joins or supports Anakin Skywalker, Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Obi-Wan Kenobi in various points in the saga. R2-D2 has been played by English actor Kenny Baker in all six original Star Wars films and is due to reprise the role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the first installment of the upcoming sequel trilogy, making him one of just two characters/actors along with C-3PO to appear in all seven films.
R2-D2 was designed in artwork by Ralph McQuarrie and co-developed by John Stears but actually built by Tony Dyson, who ran his own studio called "The White Horse Toy Company" in the UK. Many scenes also made use of radio controlled and CGI versions of the character. Original props of R2-D2 and C-3PO are used as audio-animatronics in the queue area of Disneyland's Star Tours—The Adventures Continue attraction.

Chewbacca

Chewbacca, or "Chewie," is a fictional character in the Star Wars franchise. Chewbacca belongs to the Wookiee species, who are tall, hirsute bipeds native to the planet of Kashyyyk. Chewbacca is fiercely loyal to Han Solo, and serves as co-pilot on Solo's Millenium Falcon. Chewbacca was portrayed by actor Peter Mayhew in the Star Wars films. The character has also appeared on television, in books, comics, and video games.

Ahsoka Tano

Ahsoka Tano is a fictional character in the Star Wars universe and a protagonist in the 2008 animated film: Star Wars: The Clone Wars and the following series. When the series began with The Clone Wars movie she was depicted as a 14 year old Togruta female, and the show ended with her as a 16 year old.

Leia Organa

Princess Leia Organa of Alderaan, later Leia Organa Solo, and born Leia Amidala Skywalker, is a fictional character in the Star Wars universe, portrayed by the actress Carrie Fisher.
The character is one of the main protagonists of the original Star Wars trilogy, the romantic interest of Han Solo, the twin sister of Luke Skywalker, and the daughter of Darth Vader and Padmé Amidala.

Darth Maul

Darth Maul is a fictional character in the science fiction franchise Star Wars. Trained as Darth Sidious's first apprentice, he serves as a Sith Lord and a master of wielding a double-bladed lightsaber. He is the primary antagonist of Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace and a central villain for Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

Palpatine

Sheev Palpatine is a fictional character and the main antagonist of the Star Wars franchise, primarily portrayed by Ian McDiarmid.
In the original trilogy, he is depicted as the aged, pale-faced Emperor of the Galactic Empire. In the prequel trilogy, he is portrayed as a charismatic Senator from Naboo that—through the use of deception and political manipulation—rises to the position of Supreme Chancellor of the Galactic Republic.
Though outwardly appearing to be a well-intentioned public servant and supporter of democracy prior to becoming Emperor, he is in fact Darth Sidious, the Dark Lord of the Sith—a cult of practitioners of the dark side of the Force previously thought to have been extinct in the galaxy for a millennium. As Sidious, he instigates the Clone Wars, all but destroys the Jedi, and transforms the Republic into the tyrannical Galactic Empire. He also corrupts Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker at his side as the Sith Lord Darth Vader. Palpatine's reign comes to an end when the Rebel Alliance overthrows the Empire.

Boba Fett is a fictional character in Star Wars. A recurring antagonist in Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, he is a bounty hunter hired by Darth Vader. He also made a cameo appearance in the digitally remastered Special Edition of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope working for Jabba the Hutt. Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones establishes his origin as an unaltered clone of the bounty hunter Jango Fett raised as his son. His aura of danger and mystery have created a cult following for the character.

Grogu (The Child)

Grogu, colloquially referred to as The Child or Baby Yoda, is a fictional character from the 2019 Star Wars Disney+ original television series The Mandalorian. He a fifty year-old infant version of the same alien species as Jedi Master Yoda, but is not a younger version of Yoda himself. During the New Republic Era, The Child was sought by an Imperial who hired a Mandalorian bounty hunter to retrieve him from a compound run where he was held by mercenaries. The Child is filmed mostly utilizing animatronics and puppetry, although accentuated with computer-generated imagery (CGI). The puppet is controlled by two technicians, one who operates the eyes and mouth and another who controls other facial expressions.

C-3PO

C-3PO is a humanoid robot character from the Star Wars universe who appears in the original Star Wars films, the prequel trilogy and the upcoming sequel trilogy. He was also a major character in the ABC television show Droids, and appears frequently in the series' "Expanded Universe" of novels, comic books, and video games. Along with R2-D2, he is one of only two characters to appear in all seven Star Wars films. C-3PO is played by Anthony Daniels in all seven films; he and R2-D2 are also the only characters portrayed by the same actor in all seven films.
C-3PO is a protocol droid designed to serve human beings, and boasts that he is fluent in "over six million forms of communication". He is generally seen with his long-time counterpart, R2-D2. Threepio's main function is to assist etiquette, customs, and translation, so that meetings of different cultures run smoothly. Threepio and R2-D2 played vital and pivotal roles in the Galaxy's history. While protocol/interpreter droids range in color, C-3PO appears primarily in gold finish with silver from the right knee down.
