Roll out the red carpet! The 88th Academy Awards will air live on February 28, 2016. The Oscars are considered the most prestigious of all the awards shows, and the talented ladies below make up the nominees for the 2016 Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role.
The Golden Globe ceremony often predicts who will take home the Academy Award. This year, Jennifer Lawrence (Joy) won the Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy. Brie Lawson (Room) won for Best Actress in a Drama. The Oscars, meanwhile, do not make the distinction between the two categories. According to oddschecker.com, the 26-year-old Lawson is currently the front-runner for her performance as Ma in the heavy drama Room.
Also among the Oscar nominees for Best Actress in a Leading Role is Cate Blanchett. This marks her seventh Academy Award nomination, this year for her titular performance in Todd Haynes’s melodrama Carol. Blanchett has two previous wins for The Aviator (2004) and Blue Jasmine (2013).
You may remember a very young Saoirse Ronan receive a supporting actress nomination in 2007 for her role in Atonement. The 21-year-old actress is nominated this year for her performance as an Irish immigrant trying to make her own way in 1950s New York City in the film Brooklyn.
