Veteran actress Frances McDormand was nominated for portraying a grieving mother desperate to solve her daughter's murder in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Rising star Saoirse Ronan was nominated for the titular role in the coming-of-age film Lady Bird. Both Margot Robbie and Meryl Streep played public figures to earn their nominations. Streep played famed American publisher Katharine Graham in the historic drama The Post, while Robbie played a sympathetic version of disgraced figure skater Tonya Harding in I, Tonya.
