Over the years, Best Supporting Actress Oscars have been awarded to incredible actresses who gave gripping performances. Who are the Best Supporting Actress nominees this year? A total of five actresses received nominations. Given the Academy's love of historical dramas and period pieces, it's no surprise Mary J. Blige and Lesely Manville were nominated for Mudbound and Phantom Thread, respectively. Actresses portraying mothers received nods this year as well. Lesley Manville was nominated for her maternal role in the coming-of-age drama Lady Bird, and Allison Janney took on the role of controversial figure skater Tonya Harding's mother in I, Tonya. The Shape of Water received the most award nominations of 2018, including a Best Actress nomination for Octavia Spencer. It's hard to say who deserves the Best Supporting Actress Oscar given this incredible group of nominees.
