Mike Budenholzer was named NBA Coach of the Year for the 2018-19 season after leading the Milwaukee Bucks to the best record in the NBA and all the way to the Eastern Conference final, where they lost to the eventual champion Toronto Raptors.
At the start of the year, previous winners from NBA history, like Steve Kerr, Gregg Popovich, Tom Thibodeau, and 2018 Coach of the Year Dwane Casey, were the favorites to win the 2019 COTY Award, while Boston Celtics coach Brad Stevens and Utah Jazz coach Quin Snyder were considered up-and-coming contenders for the 2019 NBA Coach of the Year Award. Other coaches in the conversation to start the season were Brett Brown, Mike D'Antoni, Luke Walton, and Alvin Gentry.
