Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert was named 2018-19 Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight season, amassing 187 blocks and 66 steals while starting all but two games for a Jazz team that was knocked out in the first round of the playoffs.

Gobert, as the previous year's winner, was among the favorites for the 2018-19 DPOY award, along with past winners like Draymond Green and Kawhi Leonard. Also in the coversation when the season began were Joel Embiid, Anthony Davis, Myles Turner, and Jarrett Allen.

The three finalists for the 2018-19 Defensive Player of the Year were the winner Gobert, Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo, who was named 2018-19 NBA MVP, and Oklahoma City Thunder forward Paul George.
