Every 2020 NBA Most Improved Player Award candidate is hoping to take a significant step forward in his career. The list of MIP candidates typically features players in two categories competing for the prize. One level is the slate of good players becoming great or All-Star worthy like Paul George, Jimmy Butler, and Victor Oladipo in recent years.

The other type of player to contend for the award is someone who was struggling finally breaking out to show his skills like past winners Ryan Anderson, Aaron Brooks, and Bobby Simmons. Younger players frequently win the award when taking a huge jump forward in the league. Players like Brandon Ingram, Jayson Tatum, and De'Aaron Fox all could be looking to take the next step in their careers.
