The boy band 98° have always been something of a standout: They formed using their own independent record labels and questionably ethical music producers, they could all sing - like, really sing - and they had a sexy but wholesome vibe that never felt contrived or calculated. So, what exactly happened to 98°? Where have they been?
Though the group's members grew up in or have a strong connection to Ohio, they didn't form as a band until they all met in Los Angeles in 1996. Jeff Timmons had just dropped out of college, and he eventually met Nick Lachey. Lachey's friend Justin Jeffre, with whom Lachey had performed back in Ohio, soon joined the growing group. Finally, Lachey's brother, Drew, who was working as an EMT in New York City, was persuaded to join as well, and the band we know and love as 98° was born.
As it turns out, 98° are still very much a thing, and after taking a nearly decade-long hiatus, they've reemerged as a (slightly) older, (perhaps) wiser, but still undeniably charming boy(ish) band. And each member has gone to pursue their own interests, some of which may surprise you.
Nick Lachey Starred In 'Newlyweds' With Then-Wife Jessica Simpson
One of the most memorable post-98° projects any member took part in was Nick Lachey's brief but unforgettable run in the MTV reality show Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica, which followed the early years of his marriage to Jessica Simpson. The running theme throughout the series is Simpson's seemingly "dumb-blond" persona, which never shines brighter than during the famous chicken/tuna incident, in which she eats a can of tuna and asks, "Is this chicken, what I have, or is this fish? I know it's tuna, but it says 'Chicken... by the Sea.'"
Lachey is presented as Simpson's sane, grounding other-half. But Simpson has more than proven she is anything but dumb (if you're not convinced, ask yourself if you have a billion dollar empire, because she does). Newlyweds was canceled in 2005, and Lachey and Simpson divorced the following year.
Nick Lachey Has Released Four Solo Albums
More so than any other 98° member, Nick Lachey has kept making music as a solo artist during the band's hiatus and afterward. As of 2019, he's released four solo albums, including What's Left of Me, which reached No. 2 on the Billboard charts. The album's title song also became a hit.
Lachey produced the music reality show Taking the Stage and hosted the singing competition The Sing-Off. He dabbled in acting as well, including a recurring role on the TV series Charmed.

In 2006, Drew Lachey waltzed away with the Mirrorball Trophy on the second season of Dancing with the Stars. With his dance partner, Cheryl Burke, he earned a perfect score not once, not twice, but three times during the competition - for their tango, Paso Doble, and freestyle.
As Lachey was crowned the winner, his wife, Lea, was due to have their first baby at any moment. "I’m the luckiest man in the world right now," Lachey said.
Nick Lachey Married MTV VJ Vanessa Minnillo
Vanessa Minnillo was cast in Nick Lachey's music video for the single "What's Left of Me," and the two started dating. They married on Richard Branson's private island in 2011. As of 2019, they have three children, Phoenix, Brooklyn, and Camden.
"I’m typically the one that wakes up with them and gets the day started, so my time with them in the morning is really important," Lachey said of his life as a family man. "I usually take Cam and Brooklyn to school when I’m not working, so that one-on-one time you get with them is pretty special."
