Here are the best quotes from A Dog's Purpose, a tear-jerking movie that tells the story about one dog who yearns to discover the meaning of life across several lifetimes. The comedy-drama was adapted into a screenplay by Audrey Wells based on the book of the same name by W. Bruce Cameron. Lasse Hallström directed A Dog's Purpose, which opened theatrically in the United States on January 27, 2017.

In A Dog's Purpose, dog Bailey (voiced by Josh Gad) is born and welcomed into a family where he meets his best friend, a boy named Ethan (K.J. Apa). Bailey and Ethan share a wonderful life together of playing, joking around and Bailey helping Ethan make moves on ladies (including Britt Robertson). All the while, Bailey wonders what his purpose is as a dog and what he was put here to do.

So when Bailey grows old and has to say goodbye to Ethan, he is surprised to be reincarnated as another dog who lives with another group of humans. This process of reincarnation continues over and over as Bailey has opportunities to bring love and comfort to his humans along the way, and even involves a reunion with now-adult Ethan (Dennis Quaid).

What is the Meaning of Life?

      Video: YouTube

Bailey: What is the meaning of life? Are we here for a reason? Is there a point to any of this? And why does food taste so much better in the trash? This was me, then this was me. I came back as this little guy. A lot of lives for one dog to live. But I'm getting ahead of myself. Let's start at the beginning. For me, it all began with a boy. His name was Ethan. My name was Bailey, Bailey, Bailey, Bailey. Whenever life got Ethan down, I knew exactly what to do. We played with that ball all afternoon. Ethan loved it. Sometimes he just needed a little nudge. We spent everyday together. As the years went by, I could tell my time with Ethan was coming to an end. And then it happened. I was back. I didn't have a... I'm a girl? I had a new purpose. I was needed again, and again, and again. With each new life I was learning a new lesson. I tried to make sense out of all the things I had seen. Was there a point to this journey of mine? And how did bacon fit in? If I can get you licking and loving, I have my purpose.

Bailey, the dog in the film, explains his life with his beloved human Ethan in this A Dog's Purpose movie quote. When his time with Ethan ends, Bailey learns that he comes back as other dogs, a process that allows him to learn what his purpose as a dog is.

        Bailey: That's funny.
