The Battle of Alam el Halfa took place between 30 August and 5 September 1942 south of El Alamein during the Western Desert Campaign of the Second World War. Panzerarmee Afrika—a German-Italian force commanded by Generalfeldmarschall Erwin Rommel—attempted an envelopment of the British Eighth Army, commanded by Bernard Montgomery. In the last major Axis offensive of the Western Desert Campaign, Rommel had planned to defeat the British Eighth Army before Allied reinforcements made an Axis victory in Africa impossible. Bir Hakeim is an oasis in the Libyan desert and the site of a former Ottoman Empire fort. During the Battle of Gazala, the 1st Free French Brigade of Général de brigade Marie Pierre Kœnig defended the site, from 26 May – 11 June against much larger German and Italian forces, commanded by Generaloberst Erwin Rommel. The battle was later used for propaganda purposes by all involved parties. Tobruk was taken ten days later by Panzerarmee Afrika but the delay imposed on the Axis offensive by the defence of the fortress, influenced the cancellation of Operation Herkules, the planned invasion of Malta. It took place in December 1942 between Allied forces led by Bernard Law Montgomery and the Axis forces led by Erwin Rommel, during the Axis' long withdrawal from El Alamein to Tunis. The Battle of Gazala was fought during the Western Desert Campaign of the Second World War, around the port of Tobruk in Libya from 26 May to 21 June 1942. The combatants on the Axis side were the Panzer Army Afrika, consisting of German and Italian units and commanded by the "Desert Fox" Colonel-General Erwin Rommel; the Allied forces were the Eighth Army, commanded by Lieutenant-General Neil Ritchie under the close supervision of the Commander-in-Chief Middle East, General Sir Claude Auchinleck.
