A Long Way Down Movie Quotes

"A Long Way Down" movie quotes tell the story of four people, down on their luck and all attempting suicide, who find comfort, hope and new life with each other. The drama film was directed by Pascal Chaumeil using a screenplay by Jack Thorne. Loosely based on the Nick Hornby book of the same name, "A Long Way Down" opened in the United States on July 11, 2014.

In "A Long Way Down," four people meet on New Year's Eve atop a London skyscraper when all head there with the intent of killing themselves. Martin Sharp (Pierce Brosnan) was once a successful celebrity before a relationship with an underage girl ruined his marriage, his career and his freedom, landing him in prison. Maureen Thompson (Toni Collette) struggles with life as a mother of a disabled son, with little time or energy for herself. Jess Crichton (Imogen Poots) struggles with life, one especially strained with a poor relationship to her politician father (Sam Neill). JJ Maguire (Aaron Paul) was once an American musician but now lost, and carrying terminal cancer, in London.

Instead of jumping to their deaths, the four agree to a pact not to kill themselves before Valentine's Day. Their compelling story soon is picked up by the media and they become instant celebrities. So to escape the spotlight, they head on vacation together where the four bond and become a makeshift family. But not all is well as on Valentine's Day, the four are faced with another life or death decision once again.

"A Long Way Down" is just one of numerous great movies appearing in theaters in July 2014 just like "Dawn of Planet of the Apes," "Tammy," "Earth to Echo," "Deliver Us from Evil," "Transformers: Age of Extinction," "Snowpiercer," "Begin Again," "They Came Together," "Think Like a Man Too," "22 Jump Street, "How to Train Your Dragon 2," "Hellion," "The Rover," The Fault in Our Stars," "Edge of Tomorrow," "A Million Ways to Die in the West," "Maleficent," "Night Moves," "Filth," "Blended," and "X-Men: Days of Future Past."

Four People Up On a Roof

    Video: YouTube

Maureen Thompson: "Excuse me, excuse me, hi, I'm not entirely sure how to phrase this but, are you going to be long?"
    Martin Sharp: "What?"
Maureen Thompson: "I wasn't entirely sure whether to wait my turn or… I hadn't considered the wire but I'd really like to borrow your ladder. Maybe I should just wait. I'll wait."
Martin Sharp: "Are you just going to stand there and watch?"
Maureen Thompson: "No, no, of course, you'll be wanting to do it on your own, I'd imagine."
    Martin Sharp: "You'd imagine right."
    Maureen Thompson: "I'll go there."
Martin Sharp: "I'll give you a shout on the way down."

Jess Crichton: "Out of my way!"
    Martin Sharp: "Stop!"

J.J. Maguire: "Hi, any of you guys order a pizza?"
    ...Martin Sharp: "Four people"
Jess Crichton: "Up on one roof, that's practically a convention."

The four meet with all the same intent: Jumping off a high rise building in London to their death. This chance encounter, however, changes each of their lives forever.

Jess Crichton: "We're in a gang?"
Martin Sharp: "We're not a gang."
Jess Crichton: "We signed a pact… Here's the deal. Promise nobody kills themselves until Valentine's Day."
Maureen Thompson: "That's not too a ridiculous idea."
Martin Sharp: "I'm sure we'll all live to regret this."

The four agree to a pact. Instead of killing themselves on New Year's Eve, they agree to each stay safe until Valentine's Day. It's kind of like a gang, but a good one.

What If We Make It Our Story

    Video: YouTube

Martin Sharp: "What if we make it our story, not theirs?"
Jess Crichton: "Make it a fun one."

Martin Sharp: "We were up there and we felt this…"
    JJ Maguire: "Glowing"
    Martin Sharp: "Presence"
    Maureen Thompson: "We were visited…"
Jess Crichton: "By an angel and it looked like Matt Damon and he was naked."

Martin suggests that they change the narrative around their story. Instead of being painted as sad souls, they make their story much more magical, and perhaps x-rated.
