    Brendan Fraser
    Photo: The Whale / A24

Brenden Fraser has long been a beloved actor in Hollywood, and his career speaks for itself. His breakout performance in Dogfight and Encino Man elevated him to the A-list, and he spent the 1990s and early 2000s headlining numerous high-profile films. His Mummy franchise proved he could lead a summer blockbuster, but he faded into relative obscurity for several years.

This was due to a number of personal issues, including several health problems related to his work in action movies. While he appeared in several projects throughout the twenty-teens, 2022 was his year. In 2022, he starred in only one film, The Whale, and he's received some of the most significant praise for his acting in that film than he's received throughout his career.

The Whale premiered at the Venice Film Festival to widespread critical acclaim, earning Fraser a Golden Globe and Critics' Choice Award. Fraser has a lot of loving fans, and they support him vocally and online. When he was told about his support during an interview, he got quiet and choked up, saying only, “Shucks, ma'am.”

    Jenna Ortega
    Photo: Wednesday / Netflix

Jenna Ortega began acting as a child, playing the eponymous lead in flashbacks in Jane the Virgin. Her performance was only the beginning of what has become a promising career. Ortega's acting career may have begun in 2012, but 2022 was definitely her year, thanks to the release of Netflix's Wednesday.

Ortega plays the title character: Wednesday Addams, a girl who doesn't fit in with her peers, which is largely due to her dropping piranha into the school swimming pool. She goes off to Nevermore Academy, where she finds a group of people like her, and she becomes the central figure in a plot involving murder, monsters, and more.

Ortega's performance drew widespread critical acclaim, ensuring the series will continue, and Ortega's career is only just beginning. While she received some criticism for comments regarding a dance scene she shot while COVID-19 positive, that same dance has gone viral, and the criticism came from a small minority.

  • Jennifer Coolidge
    Photo: The Watcher / Netflix

Many comedy fans first met Jennifer Coolidge when she played “Stiffler's Mom” in American Pie, but that was just one of a dozen credits the actress had to her name in 1999. She's been working hard in television and on the silver screen since beginning her career playing Jodi (the masseuse) in Seinfeld in 1993.

Coolidge has earned much praise over the years for her work, but in 2022, she gained renewed attention through her portrayal of Tanya McQuoid in The White Lotus. The HBO series has done incredibly well since it premiered in 2021, and Coolidge was honored for her performance with the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series of Movie.

    Ke Huy Quan

In the 1980s, Ke Huy Quan played significant roles in The Goonies and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. His acting career slowed down a bit in the 1990s, and he transitioned into film production. Fortunately, he decided to return to acting in 2018, but it was 2022 that put him on everyone's radar.

In 2022, Ke Huy Quan starred as Waymond Wang in Everything Everywhere All at Once, which was a huge success. Wang is a meek man who doesn't have it all together until he suddenly does when he becomes Alpha-Waymond. The plot is complex, but essentially, he goes from mild-mannered husband to fanny pack-wielding bad*ss without hesitation, and it's fantastic.

Quan and many others have been nominated for and won numerous awards from a myriad of agencies since the film's release. Quan took home the award for Best Supporting Actor from the Atlanta Film Critics Circle, the Black Film Critics Circle Awards, and much more. Quan made a comeback in 2022 in a big way, and his career has achieved a well-deserved revival.

    Florence Pugh
Photo: Don't Worry Darling / Warner Bros. Pictures

Florence Pugh's career goes back to 2014's The Falling, and she's appeared in several high-profile movies and TV miniseries since. Of course, she came to international attention when she debuted the character of Yelena Belova in Black Widow. She followed up that performance in Hawkeye and appears to be solidified in the MCU for the foreseeable future.

In 2022, Pugh appeared in three movies: Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, Don't Worry Darling, and The Wonder. She gained significant praise for her performance in Don't Worry Darling, and the same is true of The Wonder. Pugh is a rising star in Hollywood, and her fans pay close attention to each of her projects, so 2022 is likely only one year of many where she will be noteworthy.

    Joseph Quinn

    Joseph Quinn
    Photo: Stranger Things / Netflix

Joseph Quinn was relatively unknown to the masses before 2022 despite appearing in numerous TV series and a couple of films. While he had some early success on the small screen via Dickensian and Les Misérables, it wasn't until he showed up in the fourth season of Stranger Things that he became a household name.

Quinn plays Eddie Munson, a drug-dealing dungeon master who charismatically leads his players through intricately woven fantasies. He's also the subject of a murder investigation related to the Satanic Panic gripping Hawkins, Indiana. This leads to a violent mob looking for him, but it also sets him up for an impressive and viral hero moment.

Eddie Munson's playing of Metallica's “Master of Puppets” in the Upside-Down is the most metal thing that's ever been recorded for a TV series, and it's epic. Munson, and Quinn, went viral for that scene, and a lot of love has been cast Quinn's way, making 2022 his breakout year.
