The best NFL coaches of all time are hands down the best men ever to lead their respective National Football League teams into battle. There are reasons why these men have teams, stadiums, <a class="edS-cl" href="https://www.ranker.com/list/best-video-game-franchises/ranker-games?ref=internalCrossLinking_keyword">video game franchises</a> and that little thing given away annually to the Super Bowl champion named after them. These are the best NFL coaches to have ever lived, period. Regardless of which NFL team you root for, there is little doubt that the vast majority of football fans would agree that Vince Lombardi is the greatest football coach in the history of mankind. As a forefather to the NFL, Lombardi coached the <a class="edS-cl" href="https://www.ranker.com/list/best-green-bay-packers-kickers-ever/ranker-nfl?ref=internalCrossLinking_keyword">Green Bay Packers</a> in the 1960s, leading them to five championships in a seven-year span including wins in the first two Super Bowls ever. His inspirational words are still widely used today as is his name which graces the title of the Lombardi Trophy, awarded to the annual champion of the National Football League.But there are many more legendary NFL coaches of past and present that also deserve a place on this list for their brilliance, inspiration and undeniable success on the field. Coaches like Tom Landry, Don Shula, George Halas, Paul Brown and Chuck Noll were the leaders in the league a few decades ago while the <a href="/list/best-current-nfl-coaches/ranker-nfl" target="_blank">best current NFL coaches</a> like Bill Belichick, Mike Tomlin and Mike Shanahan continue to improve upon their already legendary status in NFL history.How do you define which NFL coach is the best of all time? Is it from their championships and wins or do you look at their entire career to compare one body of work to another? The best current NFL coaches are those top football coaches in 2018-2019&nbsp;who&#39;ve led their team to greatness in recent years and continue to do so. Between the longest-tenured National Football League coaches to the experienced coaches in new roles, one of these talented coaches will guide their team to a Super Bowl championship come February.

In the love-him-or-hate-him category, Bill Belichick of the New England Patriots is regarded as among the elite current NFL coaches if not one of the <a href="/crowdranked-list/top-10-nfl-coaches-in-history" target="_blank">best NFL coaches of all time</a>. Coaching the Pats since 2000, Belichick is a three-time NFL Coach of the Year as he helped Tom Brady and company play in five Super Bowls, winning three, in 13 seasons.

But even Belichick can be beaten and the likes of John Harbaugh of the Baltimore Ravens and Ben McAdoo&nbsp;formerly of the New York Giants have done so in recent years, in the NFL Playoffs, in convincing fashion. The list of the <a href="http://www.ranker.com/crowdranked-list/best-college-football-coaches-of-all-time?ref=internalCrossLinking_keyword">best coaches</a> currently in the NFL doesn&#39;t end there though. Mike Tomlin of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Mike McCarthy of the Dallas Cowboys, Sean Payton of the New Orleans Saints, and Andy Reid of the Kansas City Chiefs&nbsp;all fit that bill too.

Sadly, as great as some of these coaches are, others will inevitably end up quickly replaced with someone else after a poor season and possibly end up among the <a href="/list/worst-nfl-coaches-of-all-time/arthur-roderick" target="_blank">worst NFL coaches of all time</a> rankings. But as a new season starts, each have a clean slate and opportunity for greatness. Who knows, perhaps some will surprise everyone and quickly rise to become the best current NFL coach one day soon.

The worst NFL coaches of all time include highly talented offensive coordinators, skilled positional coaches, and even NCAA Football champions, but when each of these men were given their shot at being a head coach in the National Football League, they simply couldn&#39;t cut it. You think your coach is bad for missing the playoffs this year? Remember that it could be so much worse.

These coaches didn&#39;t just do poorly, they tallied some of the worst seasons in NFL history. Who can forget the Detroit Lions going 0-16 in 2008 under head coach Rod Marinelli? The 1976 Tampa Bay Buccaneers were not much better as head coach John McKay and quarterback Steve Spurrier, who also made this list for his dreadful experience coaching the Washington Redskins 25 years later, finished the year with an unimpressive 0-14 record.

For as many things as these coaches did wrong in the NFL, many of them have done other great things at other levels. Nick Saban is perhaps the best example of that when he went from winning the college football national championship with the LSU Tigers, then led two losing seasons in the NFL with the Miami Dolphins before returning to the collegiate ranks to take Alabama to three title games in four years. Certainly the case could be made that Saban may be among the worst head coaches in NFL history but he&#39;s also one of the best in NCAA Football as well.

Then there&#39;s a whole &#39;nother way to look at coaches and say that they&#39;re the worst, for things they did off the field that were detrimental. Sure Greg Williams&#39; 3-13 season with the Buffalo Bills was bad, but his involvement in the 2012 New Orleans Saints bounty scandal is what put him high on this list.

So for whatever these coaches did, or failed to do, that put them on this list, they serve as a good reminder of exactly how hard it is to be a professional football coach in the National Football League. If nothing else, it surely makes for some good football - that is, if you&#39;re rooting for the opposing team.

Jimmy Johnson was another incredible coach for the Cowboys, leading the franchise to back-to-back Super Bowl Championships in 1992 and 1993. Just two years later coach Barry Switzer won a Super Bowl with the Cowboys as well, making him one of only three coaches to win both a college national and NFL Championship.

John Harbaugh

John W. Harbaugh (born September 23, 1962) is the head coach of the Baltimore Ravens of the National Football League (NFL). Previously, he coached the defensive backs for the Philadelphia Eagles and served as the Eagles special teams coach for nine years. Harbaugh and his younger brother, former San Francisco 49ers and now University of Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh, are the first pair of brothers in NFL history to serve as head coaches. Jack Harbaugh, Jim and John's father, served 45 years as a college defensive coach, an assistant coach, and a running backs coach. John and the Ravens beat his brother, Jim, and the 49ers at Super Bowl XLVII in New Orleans on February 3, 2013 by a score of 34-31.
He has led the Ravens to 114 wins (including playoffs) since his tenure began in 2008, fourth most in the NFL over that span, and has surpassed Brian Billick for the most wins by a head coach in Baltimore Ravens franchise history. His 10 playoff wins are the second most by any head coach in the NFL since 2008. Outside winning Super Bowl XLVII, Harbaugh has guided the Ravens to three AFC North division championships and three AFC Championship appearances.

Doug Pederson

Douglas Irving Pederson (born January 31, 1968) is an American football coach and former player who is currently the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League. He served as the offensive coordinator of the Kansas City Chiefs from 2013 to 2015. He spent most of his playing career as a member of the Green Bay Packers, serving as a backup quarterback to Brett Favre and holder on placekicks, and winning Super Bowl XXXI with the team over the New England Patriots. He was also a backup to Dan Marino as a member of the Miami Dolphins, and a starting quarterback for the Eagles and Cleveland Browns.
In his second season as the Eagles' head coach, Pederson won Super Bowl LII (also against the Patriots), marking the first Super Bowl title in franchise history. He also became just the fourth person, after Mike Ditka, Tom Flores and Tony Dungy to win a Super Bowl as both a player and head coach.

Ron Rivera

Ronald Eugene "Ron" Rivera (born January 7, 1962) also known as "Riverboat Ron" is an American football coach and former player who is the head coach of the Washington Football Team of the National Football League (NFL). He has also been the head coach for the Carolina Panthers, and the defensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears and San Diego Chargers.Rivera played college football at the University of California in Berkeley, and was recognized as an All-American linebacker. He was selected in the second round of the 1984 NFL draft by the Chicago Bears, and was a backup on the 1985 team which won Super Bowl XX.  Rivera was recognized as the NFL Coach of the Year by the Associated Press in 2013 and in 2015. He led the Panthers to three divisional titles, and an appearance in Super Bowl 50.
