Angelina Jolie's tattoos chronicle how the actress rose from the young girl who appeared in music videos to an Academy Award-winning leading lady and acclaimed humanitarian. Though some of her tattoos have been removed, the faint outlines remain as a reminder of where she's been and how far she's come throughout the years.
Some of the earliest Angelina Jolie tattoos were done when she was just starting out in the entertainment business and appearing in films like "Cyborg 2" and "Hackers." Just like some of Angelina Jolie's movies have faded into history many of her early inkings have since been covered up or removed.
Perhaps her most notable tattoo was the name "Billy Bob" to honor her one-time husband, actor Billy Bob Thornton. After their marriage ended in 2003, Jolie had the tattoo, and an accompanying image of a black dragon, removed. She quickly covered over the area with a new set of heart-felt tattoos, for her children.
Rather than tattooing their names, Jolie added the geo-coordinates of the birthplaces of her six children on her upper left arm, the spot formerly occupied by the "Billy Bob" tattoo. In 2011, she added a seventh set of coordinates for Oklahoma, the birthplace of her longtime partner and biological father to three of their children, Brad Pitt. This extra step to honor her family in a unique way easily qualifies as one of the best celebrity tats. What tattoos does Angelina Jolie have, and what's the meaning behind Angelina Jolie's tattoos? As the actress has stated she is open to adding more children to her growing brood, we can expect that her tattoo collection, at least those which honor her family members, will continue to grow as well. Other famous actors that have tattoos who are as famous as her include Chris Evans body art and Johnny Depp Ink
Know Your Rights Tattoo
Angelina Jolie paid homage to her favorite band the Clash with this tattoo between her shoulder blades on her upper back. The phrase "know your rights" is from a Clash song title and reportedly was added to describer her style of "humanitarian, but a little punk rock."
Bengal Tiger Tattoo
Like many of her other tattoos, this bengal tiger tattoo was inked completely by hand in true Thai tattooing style. It took two hours to complete in 2004 and was said to celebrate Jolie's Cambodian citizenship.
Khmer Script Prayer Tattoo
To cover up the Japanese kanji for the word death on her shoulder, Jolie added this Khumer script prayer. The tattoo, done by her bengal tiger tattoo artist Sompong Kanphai, translates to "May your enemies run far away from you; If you acquire riches, may they remain yours always; Your beauty will be that of Apsara; Wherever you may go, many will attend, serve and protect you, surrounding you on all sides."
Quod Me Nutrit Me Destruit
To cover up her blue tongue dragon hip tattoo, Miss Jolie added a large black cross and the latin saying "Quod Me Nutrit Me Destruit." The phrase, which has been inked by other celebs, translates to "what nourishes me, destroys me."
