13 'Animal Crossing' Fan Theories That Are Crazy Enough To Be True

In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Coco looks... rather bizarre. Redditor /u/minion_gamer tries to offer an explanation for her appearance by claiming her mother was a bunny and her father was a gyroid. It would explain why the rest of the bunnies in the series just look like regular bunnies. 

Redditor /u/Johnny_Gossamer posits that things in Animal Crossing games are a little too ideal to be believable. The fan theory suggests that your character actually died, and your little island in Animal Crossing is a version of heaven. It makes sense because there isn't really any stress in your day-to-day life, unless you count collecting Bells (which you shouldn't). What's more, you get to hang out with a bunch of cool animals, and the presents you receive in the mail could simply be the objects your family has left at your gravesite. Here's a little more speculation:

the player character in Animal Crossing is deceased and the gifts from the mother are objects placed on his/her grave. She writes letters to help cope with the loss of her beloved child. This is also why the father hardly writes, he handles his grief in a different way. It came to me when the letter my mom sent said she thought she heard my voice in the wind and it spooked her a little.

Many players view Tom Nook as the money-grubbing businessman who provides you with loans to build your house. However, Redditor /u/1945BestYear points out that Nook's economic beliefs more closely align with libertarian socialism and the economic theories of mutualism than traditional capitalism. 

When you look at Tom Nook's business models, he primarily operates under three guiding principles: free markets, user ownership, and minimal or zero interest rates. He doesn't just give away houses, but he also doesn't try to turn a profit off of them. We see this further in New Leaf when Tom Nook hands over his business to Timmy and Tommy, allowing them to graduate into business ownership while escaping from their apprenticeships. 

In Animal Crossing, you'll come across two residents: Walker, an anthropomorphic dog, and Lucky, a dog dressed as a mummy. Redditor /u/UtterEast states that the two dogs are one in the same. 

After all, their shirts are reverse in colors. Additionally, both their shirts contain numbers, and the difference between the two is 44. In many Asian languages, "four" is a homonym for "death." 

Could Animal Crossing take place in some dystopian timeline? Redditor /u/theriverjordan wrote about how it's possible that the Animal Crossing world takes place in a post-apocalyptic version of Earth. It would explain why you're the only human around as everyone else has been wiped out. 

This would also explain why the games have such a heavy emphasis on nature and conservation. The animals, which have gained sentience, saw the folly of man and are dedicated to creating a new society that is more focused on cohabiting peacefully with the planet. 

In every Animal Crossing game, your character starts out with nothing and no money. As Redditor /u/eddmario points out, you end up on an island all by yourself, yet throughout the game, you receive letters and packages from anonymous sources. The fan theory states that your character ran away from home. This would explain why you wouldn't have a place to stay when you first arrive. You just wanted to get away from your parents and begin a new life in an entirely new community. Diving a little deeper into this theory:

To add on to this, there are 2 characters throughout the entire series you do not ever see, yet they still send you mail and you cannot send mail to: your parents. Now, why can you receive mail from them, but not send any to them at all? I'll leave you guys to guess.
