14 Anime Characters Who Can Read Minds

Vote up your favorite anime mind readers.

In real life, the idea of someone who can probe your mind for your innermost secrets is kind of disturbing - but in anime, it can be a lot of fun. Or it can be terrible - that all depends on which series the anime mind readers appear in.

In Spy x Family, Anya Forger tries to keep her mind reading a secret because she's not sure how her adoptive parents will react, but it's generally presented as a positive thing - in fact, it helps her save lives on multiple occasions. But for Mao from Code Geass, it's the opposite situation. His powers not only break his brain completely, they also drive him to criminal behavior.

Whether they're amazing or upsetting, these anime telepaths are all interesting in their own way. Which one is your favorite?

  • Anya Forger - 'Spy x Family'

In most ways, Anya Forger is a typical, extremely adorable little girl. The one thing that makes her unusual is her ability to read minds. Thanks to experiments she endured as a child, she can read the thoughts of both humans and animals, as long as she's close enough to them.

She gets easily overwhelmed in crowds full of thinking people, and she has trouble understanding more complex thoughts that involve words and ideas she doesn't know. That's probably why she only knows the basics about what's going on with her adoptive parents Yor and Loid - the details are a bit much for her little brain.

Anya is sometimes able to use her powers to save peoples' lives - for example, she once rescued a child from drowning because of what she heard in the child's mind.

Kusuo Saiki - 'The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.'

Mind reading is far from Kusuo Saiki's only psychic power - seriously, think of literally anything that even vaguely connects to the concept and he can probably do it. But it is one of the skills he uses constantly. Saiki usually speaks through telepathy rather than using actual words, a fact which nobody notices because of his ability to subtly control others' minds.

He also hears other peoples' thoughts all the time. He finds this extremely annoying, especially when people are thinking about spoilers to his favorite TV shows. His ability isn't limited to humans, either - he can also read animals' thoughts. This makes it hard for him to get along with manipulative cats, no matter how cute they might be.

  • Mewtwo - 'Pokémon'

It's not for nothing that Mewtwo is considered one of the most powerful Pokémon in existence. Created as a clone of Mew with maxed out psychic abilities, Mewtwo can do just about anything you can imagine with its mind.

It reads the thoughts of scientists to learn about the world outside the lab, and ends up becoming thoroughly disgusted with humankind. It can also communicate telepathically with other Pokémon, erase memories, and control the thoughts and behaviors of others.

    Haruka Kotoura - 'Kotoura-san'

For Haruka Kotoura, being psychic is a miserable experience - at least, it is in the beginning. As a small child, she can't tell the difference between other peoples' thoughts and words, so she ends up blurting out sensitive information and responding to things that no one said. This leads to her classmates isolating and bullying her.

This might not be so bad if she had support at home, but her parents are just as freaked out by her powers as her peers are. They end up abandoning her altogether when she accidentally reveals that both parents are having affairs, resulting in their divorce.

The series is mostly about Kotoura coming to terms with her powers and meeting friends who accept and admire them. These days, Kotoura's biggest problem is accidentally reading her friend Manabe's pervy thoughts.

After eating the Glare-Glare Fruit, Viola gained the ability to see a wide range of things that other people can't. This includes seeing through solid matter, seeing anything within 4,000 km, and seeing into peoples' minds and memories. To accomplish this, she has to form circles with her fingers around both eyes.

She uses this both for interrogation purposes, and for figuring out when men are trying to deceive her in the world of romance.

  • Ino Yamanaka - 'Naruto'

By the time Ino is an adult, she can read minds in several ways. First of all, she can simply mine a person's brain for information, making her a major asset to the Intelligence Division. She can also relay her own thoughts to other people as she chooses.

The other method Ino uses involves the Mind-Body Switch technique, which lets her inhabit someone else's body and control it from the inside. While this is mostly about getting the target to act according to her wishes, it also gives Ino unrestricted access to her target's thoughts.
