When an anime character passes away, their friends and allies are bound to react somehow. Sometimes, that reaction is pretty subdued - but sometimes it's one of the most intense things that happens in a series. Let's take a look at anime characters who snapped when someone died.

A characters' response to a loved ones' passing can trigger a power-up, like when Goku went Super Saiyan for the first time after Frieza took down Krillin. But it can also prompt a deep, life-altering depression, like when Tomoya Okazaki stops going to work and starts drinking heavily after his wife passes away during childbirth, or when Simon can't function as a member of his team after Kamina's demise in Tengan Toppa Gurren Lagann.

Which of these striking reactions had the most impact?

Simon's Grief Tanks His Performance In 'Tengan Toppa Gurren Lagann'

Simon not only loves and respects his bro Kamina, he also relies on him for his self-confidence. So when Kamina passes away after the battle against Beastman General, it's more than he can handle. He becomes so mired in grief that he can no longer be an effective member of his team, which is a huge problem because he's expected to be the leader now that Kamina's gone. He becomes incredibly hostile towards the other members of Team Dai-Gurren, and is ultimately asked to leave his role. As he becomes increasingly unhinged, he stops being able to use his mech properly, and is rejected by the Lagann until his emotions stabilize. Meeting Nia helps him get his act together and start acting like the hero that Kamina always knew he could be.

Thorfinn's Father Is Betrayed In 'Vinland Saga'

Watching your father get shot full of arrows isn't easy for anyone, especially when you're a little boy and you think of your father as a warrior who can defeat anyone. That's what happens to Thorfinn, whose father Thors was forced to resume his Viking lifestyle after years of pacifism, not because his former allies really wanted him back, but because they wanted to ambush and destroy him. Wanting to be just like his powerful dad, Thorfinn came along for the ride, only to see the worst sight he'd ever seen in his life.

Because he was just a little boy, he couldn't do much to his father's killers, but that didn't stop him from trying. He attempted to fight as many people as he possibly could, before ultimately giving up and relying on them for food and survival... but swearing that one day, he would have his revenge.

Misa Amane actually did this twice. The first was the incident that brought her into the series in the first place: after her parents were eliminated during a break-in and she got justice via Kira, Misa not only became completely obsessed with Kira, she also tracked him down IRL and started handing out heart attacks alongside her beloved Light Yagami.

After totally changing her life to make it all about Light, she couldn't handle it when he passed away at the end of the series. As soon as she finds out, she takes her own life.

  • After Tomoya Okazaki's wife Nagisa passes away during childbirth, he doesn't go on a rampage - there's nobody to blame except for Nagisa's poor health. But he does snap: he starts drinking heavily, leaves his newborn daughter Ushio in the care of her grandparents, and stops showing up at work. It takes him nearly five years to get his act together and try to play a meaningful role in his daughter's life. By then, Ushio has already started suffering from the same disease that her mother did, leading to her demise.
