15 Anime Characters Who Suffered Greatly Because Of Their Powers

List Rules

Vote up the anime characters whose powers did them more harm than good.

No matter how amazing an anime power might be, sometimes there can be serious downsides. In fact, some anime characters can suffer tremendously because of their powers.

Sometimes, it's because of the effects of the abilities themselves, like when Shizu from That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime was unable to contain the fire spirit inside her and passed away as a result. At other times, the power itself wouldn't be so bad if not for other peoples' reactions - Utsuro from Gintama's immortality might have been a good thing if people didn't try to end him over it. Sometimes, it's both: Tomura Shigaraki from My Hero Academia accidentally destroyed his entire family using his Decay quirk. After that, he was scooped up by All For One and turned into a villain.

Whose power do you think causes them the most pain?

When Shizu was four years old, she would have perished in a WWII bombing if not for the fact that she was summoned to another world. In order to stabilize her body and keep her alive, the Demon Lord who'd accidentally summoned her ended up having the Flame Giant Ifrit possess her body.

At first, Shizu was able to make great use of Ifrit's powers and was able to make a name for herself as a skilled magic user. But as time wears on, she's no longer able to control Ifrit, and she eventually has to give up her adventuring. Her body is weak from the strain of not just the magic that consumed her body when she was transported as a child, but also housing Ifrit for so long.

She ends up passing away from the strain, but not before entrusting Rimuru with a mission to prevent the children she taught from experiencing the same thing she did.

  • Kyo Sohma - 'Fruits Basket'

The Sohma Zodiac curse isn't easy for anybody in the family to deal with, but Kyo has it the worst by far. For most members who transform into Zodiac animals, the main problems come from risking the public finding out and reacting violently and from their toxic bond with the family God Akito. Kyo has all these problems and more.

As the cat of the Zodiac, he's treated with scorn and disgust by his family. At age 18, he'll be locked in a cage for the rest of his life unless the Curse is broken. Why? While he turns into a cute orange cat under the same conditions that the rest of the family transforms, he has another form. Unless he's wearing a string of beads made from human blood and bone, he'll become a hideous catlike monster that smells like rotting flesh and can easily destroy any human unlucky enough to cross it.

Because of this, Kyo faces rejection everywhere from the family God to his own parents. His mother took her own life because of the pressures of raising him, and his father blames him for her demise.

  • Tomura Shigaraki - 'My Hero Academia'

It's hard to lead a good life when the only thing your power can do is destroy. When Tomura Shigaraki was a child known as Tenko Shimura, he ended up using his Decay quirk on his entire family, wiping them all out in a horrific chain reaction. While part of him did want to take down his abusive father, he hadn't wanted to bring any harm to his mother, his sister, his grandparents, or his dog.

Alone and reeling with the trauma of what had just happened, Tenko was easy prey for All For One, who would use him to fulfill his own twisted goals.

Chise Hatori is a Sleigh Beggy - that is, someone who passively absorbs magic from the world around her, but whose body is not equipped to handle it all. As a result, she's physically weak and often ill. What's more, she's constantly attracting magical creatures, some of which are terrifying.

Her parents were totally unable to cope with her abilities, so much so that her father left with her younger brother. Her mother, who now had to support a child she found terrifying on a single parents' income, ended up making an attempt on Chise's life. Horrified by what she'd done, she took her own life instead. Chise, having seemingly no hope of survival, puts herself up for auction.
