Most anime fans have favorite characters in the anime they love. But fans aren't the only ones with strong opinions about who the best characters are - creators have opinions too. In interviews all over the Internet, anime creators reveal their favorite characters to the fandom - and we've collected a bunch of them here.
In some cases, the creators' opinions match up neatly with those of the fans - Shinichiro Watanabe loves Spike Spiegel just as much as the fans do. But other creators deviate a little or a lot from their fandoms. While most One Piece fans would probably say that their favorite was Luffy, Zoro, Sanji, or another major character, Eiichiro Oda's favorite is Gaimon, a hermit who's been trapped in a treasure chest for 20 years. Most creators only talk about the characters they like, but Akira Toriyama expresses some frustration with one of his more popular characters, Vegeta.
Which creator favorite did you find the most surprsing?

Shinichiro Watanabe is the director behind legendary shows like Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo, as well as lesser-known but still excellent series like Kids on the Slope, Space Dandy, and Carole & Tuesday. In an interview with Red Carpet News TV, he revealed that his favorite character out of all of those that he's created is Spike Spiegel, the bounty hunter protagonist of Cowboy Bebop. Considering how beloved Spike Spiegel is, it's unsurprising that his creator loves him too.
Bebop fans who are worried about what happened to Spike at the end of the series can take heart - in the same interview, Watanabe assured audiences that he doesn't actually pass away at the end - rather, he's just sleeping.13012Interesting?

Boichi, also known as Mu-jik Park is a prolific manga and manwha creator in his own right, but anime fans probably know him best for his work illustrating the recent smash hit Dr. Stone. He has a strong preference for one of the characters he brings to life - so strong that he says,
"The only character I truly love is Kohaku. She's my favorite and I wish I could only draw Kohaku. I'm asking you, Dr. Stone fans, please buy only Kohaku figures."
Dr. Stone's writer, Riichiro Inagaki, doesn't seem to have announced his favorite, but he does think that Boichi's request is a "tall order."12014Interesting?

Levi Ackerman might be a fan favorite, but he's not the character that creator Hajime Isayama loves the most. It's also not the protagonist, Eren Jaeger.
When the series first began, Isayama favored Jean Kirstein, a haughty Survey Corps cadet who was constantly getting into fights with Eren. As the series wore on, Isayama's favorite eventually shifted towards Reiner Braun. While he didn't go into detail about why except to say that he enjoyed drawing him, it's easy to guess why such a complex character would be appealing.12522Interesting?

The characters in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure are best known for their flashy, extreme powers. But their battle prowess and supernatural abilities isn't what's most important to creator Hirohiko Araki when it comes to selecting his favorite. Instead, Araki focuses on personality. That's why he picked Josuke Higashikata, the hero of Part Four: Diamond Is Unbreakable. In an interview with actor Shosuke Tanihara, Araki said,
“Until then, I’d always made my protagonists cool heroes, but [with Josuke], it was the first time I’d depicted the protagonist as a friend.”14235Interesting?
