15 Anime Heroes Who Have Completely Villainous Powers

Updated April 10, 2021 1.8k votes 353 voters 18.7k views15 items

When you think about anime heroes, you probably don't think about people who use mind control, poison, power stealing, demonic powers, or weapons made of their own blood. But just because a power doesn't seem heroic doesn't mean that it can't be used to protect the innocent and defeat villains.

Anime heroes with villainous powers sometimes have to endure discrimination because of their skills - Hitoshi Shinso of My Hero Academia had big dreams of becoming a pro hero, but was never taken seriously by his peers because of his creepy brainwashing ability. Others, like Yu Otosaka, are the only people capable of saving the day.

Lelouch's Geass ability allows him to force his target to do whatever he tells them to. There are limits to this: he can only use it once on each person, and he can't alter his commands once issued.

Lelouch is generally fighting for good - his goal is the liberation of the Japanese people from Brittainia's colonialist grasp.

But he does sometimes use his powers to harm innocent people. Sometimes this is by accident, like when he unintentionally commands his sister to mow down every Japanese person she sees. Sometimes, though, it's intentional, which is why he's sometimes classed as an anti-hero rather than a straight-up hero.

Gowther - The Seven Deadly Sins

Gowther is the Sin of Lust, which in the world of The Seven Deadly Sins makes him a hero. But his horrifying ability, Invasion, is anything but heroic. He's able to tightly control another person's memories and mind. This can involve forcing them to see terrifying illusions, rewriting huge sections of their memories, forcing them to see their foes as friends or even lovers, and totally control their movements by hijacking their nervous system.

This is so dangerous and all-encompassing that Gowther's friends ask him to never use the move on them under any circumstances.

  • Rin Okumura is the honest-to-god son of the devil, which means that many of his powers have an 'evil' source. He usees can manifest and control the Flames of Satan, as well as wield a demonic sword. He could have easily used these abilities to fulfil his bio father's demonic ambitions, and may very well have done so - except for the fact that he was raised by a demon-slaying priest who encouraged him to protect humanity.

    Nezuko Kamado - Demon Slayer

    Photo: ufotable

In the world of Demon Slayer, demons are seen as bloodthirsty, man-eating monsters who can't be trusted for an instant. Nezuko Kamado may be a demon, but she's managed to override the whole 'human eating' thing by sleeping for most of the day.

When she's awake, she uses her demonic abilities to help her brother Tanjiro fight demons who are actually evil - or at least, who are actually causing serious harm.
