  • One of the saddest things about CLANNAD is Nagisa's death - even if it is reversed through supernatural means. If you're looking for another romance anime that will make you bawl like a baby, you should try Your Lie in April. This anime focuses on Kousei Arima, a pianist who loses the ability to play music after his mother's untimely passing. He's dragged back into the world of music by a violinist named Kaori Miyazono. While she adds color and light to a once deadened existence, her own life is tragically cut short by a terminal illness.

Angel Beats! depicts the afterlife - specifically a version of purgatory where teenagers who lost their lives too young get a chance to experience a few happy moments of adolesence, and come to terms with the events of their lives, before ultimately passing on to the next plane. However, not all of them understand why their peers are disappearing, and the Afterlife Battlefront is dedicated to stopping these disappearances at all costs. While this might not sound a whole lot like CLANNAD: After Story, the way it presents each characters' tragic past intersperced with silly slice-of-life scenes will feel deeply familiar to fans of CLANNAD. Both shows will leave you with tears in your eyes.

Like CLANNAD: After Story, Kanon is based on a Key Visual Novel, which means that they have a similar style, both aesthetically and thematically. Kanon is about a teenage boy who returns to his home town with no memories of what he experienced there. His old friends, many of whom have a number of serious personal issues of their own, seek to help him recover his memories. But each of them have their own personal problems to contend with in the meantime - problems that strongly resemble those faced by Tomoya's classmates in CLANNAD, such as illness and family tragedy. If you liked CLANNAD, Kanon is an absolute must-watch.

If you're a fan of CLANNAD: After Story who appreciated the series' strong focus on family and loss, you might also be interested in other anime with similar themes. If so, Wolf Children might be right up your alley. In CLANNAD: After Story, Tomoya loses his wife and is left to take care of their daughter - though he doesn't take on the responsibility until she's five years old. In Wolf Children, the unnamed wolfman who fathered Hana's children passes away, and she must figure out how to raise two wolf-human hybrids on her own.
