When Hi Score Girl debuted on Netflix, it met with a ready fanbase. With innovative CGI art and an adorable story about two avid gamers growing up the 90's and bonding as they compete over their developing gaming skills, it's no surprise that the show is a hit. But are there anime similar to Hi Score Girl? You bet there are!

Some anime like Hi Score Girl, are like Gamers! - focusing heavily on video games. Others, like Monthly Girls Nozaki-kun, might not really get into the whole gaming thing, but still focuses on two socially awkward people who don't know each other well at the start of the series developing their relationship through a shared interest. Whatever you enjoyed about Hi Score Girl, there's an anime out there to match it.

ERASED follows a young man as he travels back in time to his childhood self in order to prevent his classmate from losing her life. This is obviously a much darker concept than the one behind Hi Score Girl, but the two shows do have some noteworthy similarities. First of all, it's rare to find anime that take place in the '80s and '90s that weren't actually made during that time - both ERASED and Hi Score Girl are part of a very small handful of shows that look back on those times with some form of nostalgia. Also, both of them involve two socially awkward children trying to forge a friendship, although those friendships do have very different stakes.

  • Teasing Master Takagi-san follows two classmates, Takagi and Nishikata, who have an unusual dynamic - Takagi is constantly teasing Nishikata and he desperately tries to get her back without being verbally outwitted. Akira and Haruo's relationship has a lot in common with theirs - but rather than trying to outwit Akira at verbal skills, he tries to defeat her at gaming. In both cases, their bond gradually shifts from competitive to close.

    • Both Hi Score Girl and Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions! center around the antics of weird nerds who don't really fit in with mainstream society - so if that's something you loved about the former, you'll find it in the latter. Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions! focuses on a girl named Rikka who is using her belief in magical powers and a fantastical destiny to cope with the trauma she's experienced. The show also has some truly tender moments that center around her plight - but it's also hilarious. Hi Score Girl offers a similar mix of heartfelt emotions and humor.

Taiga and Ryuuji begin their relationship with constant arguments, but they do form a begrudging bond over a mutual problem - both of them can't admit their feeling to their respective crushes. Through the process of trying to play cupid for one another, they end up falling in love. Though Haruo and Akira's relationship isn't exactly the same, it does follow the same basic trajectory from antagonistic to friendly as they slowly learn about each other's lives and bond over a mutual interest.
