There is no shortage of amazing anime villains, but nothing can ever top the looming intimidation of the all-powerful anime government. If you're a rebellious anime fan looking for a show about a hero versus the world, then you're gonna love this list of anime shows taking down "the man." Whether intentional or not, these anime with evil governments are often more dangerous than the villains prominent on the show.

Anime series like Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood shows the cold-hearted actions of a government and the horrific results that follow – while also highlighting the good coming from the men and women who agreed to become a dog of the military. As the English poet, Percy Bysshe Shelley once said, "Government is an evil; it is only the thoughtlessness and vices of men that make it a necessary evil."

Fight the power! Here are 13 anime where the government is the villain.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherho... is listed (or ranked) 1 on the list 13 Anime Where the Government is the Villain

Nothing is ever black and white, but Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood pulls no punches when portraying the corruption of the State Alchemist and the government that employs them. The same Powerful State Alchemists that are celebrated by the higher-ups are feared and hated by the people in need of their help. Edward Elric's legendary status as the "Fullmetal Alchemist" – a role he begrudgingly accepted to cure his younger brother – doesn't just come from his power, but from actually helping the common man, no matter what the government ordered him to do.

As one of the most dangerous locations in anime history, living in The Capital from Akame ga Kill! is anything but ideal. Anyone that goes against the government is publicly executed through crucifixion. Even if you don't piss off the government, you'll likely die from hunger, as the heavy taxation will deprive you of buying food or water. Those who are desperate for cash are forced to sell themselves or their children as slaves.

Psycho-Pass is listed (or ranked) 4 on the list 13 Anime Where the Government is the Villain

It wouldn't be a cyberpunk story if it didn't have an omnipotent government overstepping its boundaries. In the authoritarian future of Psycho-Pass, the mental state of every passing citizen is scanned to calculate the probability of them committing a crime. If a citizen's probability of committing a crime is high, the police are dispatched to deal with the potential criminal; "potential" being the keyword here, as defining a criminal is based solely on data and not when the actual crime is committed.
