The most important question of the moment: Who should play Anna Delvey in Netflix’s upcoming television series based on her story?
First, here's the story itself: Delvey was just a 20-something who was born in Russia, attended modest schools, and lived in a rural community in Germany. However, that’s not the same story she told the upper echelon of New Yorkers. Instead, Delvey claimed she was a German heiress staying in the US to build a startup with her trust fund.
Of course, the lie worked because it looked real. Delvey tipped everyone with $100 bills, dined at some of the swankiest restaurants in New York, wore Balenciaga, and took classes with Dakota Johnson’s fitness trainer. Her parties often included the likes of Macaulay Culkin and "pharma bro" Martin Shkreli.
Delvey’s deceit soon caught up with her when she couldn't pay her hotel bill of $30,000 - at which point she sent the staff a case of 1975 Dom Pérignon. Delvey left a friend with the bill for an extravagant vacation costing $62,000, which was more than the friend made in a year. And soon, it became clear that Delvey’s loans would never be paid back, her wire transfers would never come through, and her hotel bills would always be outstanding.
In August 2017, the New York State Supreme Court charged Delvey with larceny and theft of $275,000. She has been at Rikers Island without bail ever since. But Delvey has become somewhat of a millennial icon. To some, Delvey may represent the very worst of millennial traits - entitlement and disrespect for institutions - but it’s her disregard for the establishment that has drawn millennials to her. As Neff Davis, a hotel concierge and close friend of Delvey, tweeted, “Screw the higher-ups, dumb hotels, and idiotic banks. Anna is a genius.”
So will the Netflix dramatization of Delvey's story go down as one of the greatest crime shows of our generation? And more importantly, who should play this already legendary grifter? Delvey has suggested Jennifer Lawrence or Margot Robbie. However, there may be a few other actresses who can pull off Delvey’s bombastic energy, bold brows, strawberry hair, and blatant disregard for the barriers surrounding the social elite.
