  • On April 15 a fire broke out at the Cathedral of Notre Dame. Located in Paris, the initial construction on the landmark was completed in 1345 and it is widely thought of as a symbol of the city.

    The fire spread across the roof of the cathedral, causing parts of the spire to collapse. The church had recently been under renovation. French President Emmanuel Macron tweeted that "like all our fellow citizens, I am sad tonight to see this part of us burn."

    On April 17, Prime Minister Édouard Philippe announced an international architectural contest to redesign the cathedral's spire and roofline, saying the competition will give the building "a spire suited to the techniques and challenges of our time."

    The First Picture Of A Black Hole

    On April 10, the Event Horizon Telescope captured the first photo of a black hole ever. 

    "We have seen what we thought was unseeable. We have seen and taken a picture of a black hole," said EHT Director and astrophysicist Sheperd Doeleman at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.

    The photo looks just as Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity would suggest, as spacetime is warped by the black hole's substantial mass.
