Ursula Wants Ariel's Voice Because It's Her Power

    From Redditor u/jbafofi4:

Okay so boom, in the live action Disney movie we now know that each of Ariel’s sisters rules over a part of the seven seas and have special powers. In the Disney animated series, Ursula becomes a human and uses Ariel’s voice to literally hypnotize Eric.

I’m guessing that In the live film, Ariel’s voice is her special power. She has the gift of siren song. Ursula wants it be cause with it, she can force people to bow down to her.

Ariel Didn't Put Eric's Statue In The Cavern

Ariel Didn't Put Eric's Statue In The Cavern

    From Redditor u/AudibleNod:

tldr: Flotsam and Jetsam moved Eric's statue to Ariel's cavern.

In the middle of the excellent “Under the Sea” Flounder whispers something to Ariel and she leaves. They go to her cavern and in the center is the statue Gormley commissioned. The question becomes how did it get there? Flounder said he found it. But how did he move it if it wasn't there? Earlier we see his lack of physical prowess when he and Ariel encounter a shark and he doesn't quite have the strength to help Ariel out.

Now at this point, Ursula has designs on Ariel as a way to get back into power. When the statue falls into the sea, she sees an opportunity to sow discord in the Triton household. So she orders her minions, the excellently named, Flotsam and Jetsam to move the statue into Ariel's cavern. Because there's no true demonstration of their power aside from them tipping over a small boat, we cannot say they cannot move this statue. But we cannot rule it out. Also, Ursula doesn't seem the type to do heavy lifting. She may have imbued them magical strength, however.

There's A Musical Reason To The Number Of Sisters Ariel Has

There's A Musical Reason To The Number Of Sisters Ariel Has

    From Redditor u/valonianfool:

In the original tale by Andersen, the mermaid is the youngest of six siblings. Ariel has six sisters, thus there are in total seven mermaid princesses. I would want to know why Disney chose to change the number. Is it because seven is a more traditional number common in fairy tales, or because they represent the seven seas?

    From Redditor u/travelwithmedear:

    They represent the 7 Seas.

    From Redditor u/DaMn96XD:

In addition, there are seven solmization in the singing: do (c), re (d), mi (e), fa (f), so (g), la (h), and si (a).

Alongside the number 12, the 7 is a magical number in Western culture, for example, in addition to the seas, we divide the world into seven continents.

    Ariel Is Related To Hercules

    From Redditor u/Yugi_Pines:

We know that Hercules is the son of Zeus. Poseidon is Zeus's brother. And I remember seeing somewhere that King Triton (Ariel's dad) is Poseidon's son. So this would mean that King Triton is Hercules's first cousin. And that would justify that Ariel and her sisters are Hercules's second cousins. Now I ask is this possible?

Eric Was So Obsessed With Ariel Because She Accidentally Enchanted Him

Eric Was So Obsessed With Ariel Because She Accidentally Enchanted Him
Photo: The Little Mermaid / Buena Vista Pictures Distribution

    From Redditor u/sherlockdoctor:

tldr: Eric was so obsessed with Ariel because she inadvertently enchanted him when she saved him.

Kinda a simple one really. Ariel is a mermaid, which are also known as sirens. Sirens use their voices to bewitch sailors. It's stated in the movie that Ariel has the “most beautiful voice.”

So when Ariel rescues Eric she sings to him from her heart a song about her desire to be with him. She accidentally used the magic in her voice to enchant Eric the same way she would've if she had wanted to lure him like the sirens in Greek myths, something she never quite realized she did. Ursula obviously knew how to do it, because she later used Ariel's voice to put Eric under a spell to get him to marry her. But really this explains why Eric was so obsessed/fell in love with a voice (to the point of "I will marry beautiful voice girl and no one else"), despite never having seen the girl. He literally couldn't get it out of his head, and it probably would've sent him insane if that necklace hadn't broken in the end (effectively ending both spells).

Ursula Needed Ariel's Voice For A Deeper Purpose

Ursula Needed Ariel's Voice For A Deeper Purpose
Photo: The Little Mermaid / Buena Vista Pictures Distribution

    From Redditor u/Steakhouse42:

Why did Ursula want Ariel's voice so bad? It doesn't make sense. She's VASTLY more powerful than Ariel and she can already sing. She has a human form and essentially in old age after having a long life. So what was the point of her stealing Ariel's voice. Almost all its powers we see that Ursula can already do all this. So is this major plot hole or am I missing something. If anything she should've been training Ariel.

    From Redditor u/Agent8699:

I think it was more about making it as difficult as possible for Ariel to succeed so Ariel’s soul would “belong” to Ursula. Ursula would then trade Ariel’s soul to Triton in exchange for the trident and the right to rule Atlantica, with Triton either being exiled or kept as her prisoner to torment.

Ursula knew Triton had a special fondness for his youngest daughter and would give up everything to save her.
