Famous Athletes Who Are Lawyers

So much for that stereotype about the dumb jock. This list of successful athletes who are lawyers proves that you can have both brains and brawn. Earning a law degree is no easy fete, especially while training to become a professional athlete, which makes these famous Olympians, NFL players, and baseball stars even more impressive.

For some, earning a law degree was part of a second career achieved after their days in pro sports. But other managed to pass the bar or at least finish law school while competing. Either way, these athletic attorneys probably know a thing or two about playing by the rules.

NFL player Steve Young may be the most famous athlete who is also a lawyer. After retiring from the NFL, Young received his Juris Doctor from the Brigham Young University J. Reuben Clark Law School. Famous MLB manager Tony La Russa earned a Juris Doctor degree from Florida State University College of Law in 1978 and passed the Florida Bar in 1980. NFL Champion Alan Page even went on to become Associate Justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court. Not bad for a football player!

Men aren’t the only sports stars going for gold and a JD. Several smart female athletes are also lawyers. Olympic gold medal gymnast Shannon Miller graduated from Boston College Law School in 2007. Olympic rower Anita DeFrantz earned her law degree at the University of Pennsylvania Law School. And Olympic rower Caryn Davies earned her J.D. from Columbia Law School in 2013.
