During the Civil War, many men received draft letters and they joined a battle that promised to change America. Photographers captured these soldiers via snapshot, and some of the resulting Civil War portraits were oddly attractive. In fact, the hottest Civil War soldiers might make you thankful for the invention of the camera.

So the next time you flip through an old US history book, you don't have to feel bad about lingering on certain pages. It's okay to look at the photographs of the men who served.
