Everything We Learned About 'Avengers: Endgame' From The First Trailer

Updated March 8, 2019 99.0k views12 items

On December 7, 2018, Marvel dropped the first trailer for the fourth installment of Avengers. The trailer confirmed the title of the film - Avengers: Endgame - and also suggested that some Phase 4 MCU theories are likely correct.

Clocking in at just under two-and-a-half minutes, the trailer finds Earth's Mightiest Heroes at the lowest of lows. Tony Stark is stuck in space. Thor broods. Steve Rogers sheds a cinematic tear. Scott Lang is, well, Scott Lang. The teaser is more emotional aesthetic than plot, but as we all know, Kevin Feige and co. are not ones to haphazardly chop a trailer together. Each frame of the Avengers: Endgame trailer holds a hint as to how Phase 3 of the MCU wraps up.

Let's break down the Avengers: Endgame trailer.

  • The Trailer Opens With Tony Stark Lost In Space - With An Ultron-Looking Mask

A desolate Tony Stark sits on a ship, setting up his helmet to record a message for Pepper Potts. His partially destroyed Iron Man helmet is reminiscent of Ultron's helmet, and this may not be by accident. Many credit Doctor Strange for hinting at the title Endgame during Infinity War, but it was actually Tony who first brought up the term in the second installment Age of Ultron

As Earth's Mightiest Heroes argued over the accidental creation of an artificial intelligence super-villain, Stark defended his choice to create Ultron, saying, "A hostile alien army came charging through a hole in space. We're standing 300 feet below it. We're the Avengers. We can bust arms dealers all the live long day, but that, up there, that's the endgame." It doesn't feel like a coincidence that he ended up in the place he fears the most.

  • Tony Stark Might Be Rescued, If Pepper Potts Has Anything To Say About It

"Just for the record, being adrift in space with zero promise of rescue is more fun than it sounds," Tony Stark says as he records a message for Pepper Potts. The billionaire seems fairly certain that this is how his life ends, but chances are, he will be rescued - and by Miss Potts herself to boot.

In October 2018, Gwyneth Paltrow, who plays Potts, revealed a photo of herself in an Iron Man suit of her own. As fans of the comics know, Potts dons a suit of her own and goes by the moniker "Rescue." Perhaps this could be her shining moment to prove she is not just adept at running Stark Industries - she is ready to avenge her loved ones, too.

  • Tony Stark Is Probably Stuck On The 'Benatar'

As Tony Stark delivers his final goodbye to Pepper Potts, we see a ship adrift in space. The ship is likely the Benatar, the Guardian's new ship after they lost Milano. In the comics, Stark joins the Guardians, which is why many speculate this could happen in the fourth installment of Avengers as well.

The way the trailer is cut suggests that this is the ship Stark (and presumably Nebula) are stuck on, but given Marvel's penchant for misdirection, there is a chance an entirely different crew is on this ship.

  • Thanos Took Off His Armor To Contemplate His Actions

After Tony Stark seemingly gives his final goodbye to the love of his life, the trailer cuts to an unnamed planet, where Thanos's armor ominously hangs. This is a direct homage to the Infinity War comics. In the 1991 graphic novel, Thanos hangs up his armor as a "Thanos-crow" after the infamous snap. In the comics, the universe is reset to how it was before the dusting, and Thanos retires to an alien planet to contemplate life and farm.

The trailer shows Thanos's hand weaving through alien crops after this shot. Many fans believe that the Avengers will be able to undo the snap, but it is unclear if this shot is as true to the comics as it insinuates.
