Not everyone was surprised to see American Idol and all the uncomfortable Idol moments return in 2018, just two years after the show's initial finale. The rebooted program was a much different viewing experience than its predecessor, though. There were even more awkward, WTF moments marking the ABC re-release.
The judges' behaviors were way more questionable this time around; the contestants were somewhat mild in comparison. Sure, there were some interesting show hopefuls, but, for the most part, they handled being in a singing competition well.
The new judges were quite impressive – Lionel Ritchie, Luke Bryan, and Katy Perry all appeared. They were a bit awkward together, though. Perhaps they still needed to find their niches. Maybe they were just trying to get more ratings. Either way, they all contributed to some of the weirdest reality show scenes ever.
During the 2018 American Idol finale, Becca Kufrin appeared on the show to promote her upcoming season of The Bachelorette. Katy Perry seemed to lose her mind over the reality star, bowing to her and kissing, nuzzling, and refusing to relinquish her hand. Finally, though, Luke Bryan managed to pull Perry away.
Unassuming 19-year-old singer Benjamin Glaze was auditioning for the judges when Katy Perry asked if he'd ever kissed a girl and liked it (a reference to her song "I Kissed a Girl"). When he said no, Perry stepped forward and planted a smooch on the clearly apprehensive young contestant. He later told The New York Times:
I was a tad bit uncomfortable. I wanted to save it for my first relationship. I wanted it to be special. Would I have done it if she said, "Would you kiss me?" No, I would have said no. I know a lot of guys would be like, "Heck yeah!" But for me, I was raised in a conservative family and I was uncomfortable immediately. I wanted my first kiss to be special.
For her American Idol audition, 22-year-old Michelle Sussett performed a rousing rendition of Selena's "Techno Cumbia." She then taught the judges an awesome dance number. That's when Perry took a spill, though. Her skirt rode up, and she flashed the whole room.
As American Idol neared the end of the 2018 season, a very uncomfortable exchange took place between Katy Perry and Ryan Seacrest. Seacrest, apparently unaware the live show was back on the air, said some strange things to Perry. He told her her mom was pretty, noting, "I hope the apple doesn't fall far from the tree."
Perry told him she's not a mom, and the famous host seemed to imply he would impregnate her.
