Ways Back to the Future Predicted the Future

Back to the Future is one of the greatest movie series of all time, and according to the late Carl Sagan, Back to the Future Part II contains the most realistic portrayal of time travel in film. Along with some well-thought out logic, there are a lot of ways Part II predicted the future - and even though they were comedic or far-fetched at the time, these predictions have actually come to pass.

When the 1989 sequel sent Marty and Doc Brown to 2015, it showcased a prescient vision of the future. There are no flying cars today, no, but in many other ways, the film was spot-on. Whether foreseeing parts of personal life or the way the world works, the Back to the Future trilogy had a strange way of identifying just where we were going as a culture. Sometimes it was simply observant, but in Part II, it was almost visionary.

Did the movie predict hoverboards or did it make people try to figure out hoverboards because the portrayal was so cool? The chicken/egg debate is astounding with a film like Back to the Future Part II.

Our list covers the wide ways in which the fictional version of 2015 pretty accurately predicted and even shaped the actual 2015. Whether Doc Brown really knew what he was doing or he was a mad scientist with a wicked case of luck, he allowed provided us with glimpse at a future that turned out to be closer to the real thing than audiences ever could have known.

The Chicago Cubs hadn't won a championship in over a century - but 2015, the year that Back to the Future II predicted that they would win the World Series, came awfully close to being their year.

In case you don't necessarily have Back to the Future II memorized, here's a quick recap: when Marty, Doc, and Jennifer go back to the future in 2015 to save Marty's kids, Biff Tannen spots them, and uses their time machine to go back in time to 1989. He takes with him a Sports Almanac, and uses it to make money on sporting events.

Screenwriter Bob Gale said made up the idea that the Cubs would win the 2015 Word Series because, up until then, it seemed pretty far-fetched. But in a world where many sports fans believe that baseball superstitions, jinxes, and curses, could it be that Back to the Future II's plot line is responsible for the Cubs' 2016 win?

Screenwriter Bob Gale confirmed it - Biff Tannen's character in Back to the Future II was based on Donald Trump. In an interview with the Daily Beast, Gale said, "You watch Part II again, and there's a scene where Marty confronts Biff in his office and there's a huge portrait of Biff on the wall behind Biff, and there's one moment where Biff kind of stands up and he takes exactly the same pose as the portrait? Yeah."

3D technology wasn't very good back in the day, so no one really saw the Jaws 19 3D bit  as something to take seriously. Given the number of Transformers movies we've all seen in 3D, it seems they were way ahead of the curve. Back to the Future Part II also called just how abundant franchises and sequels would become over three decades; the real 2015 may not have Jaws 19, but all three of the biggest movies of the year are sequels.

Computers that are handheld? Computers that have a fully functional touchscreen? This isn't going to happen. Until Apple, Google, Microsoft, the open source movement and everyone else came along to make it real.

Darn straight. Not even going to joke about this one. If the hoverboard didn't happen by 2015, it was not going to be a great year. But Hendo game along and went, "no, this won't do."

Yup, there wasn't a baseball team in Miami when it was suggested they were going to the World Series. While the Cubs have never won (a truly bold prediction, really), the Miami Marlins are now a thing that exists after their inception as the Florida Marlins in 1993. In 1998, the Marlins even got some company from the Tampa Bay Rays, a second Florida MLB team.
