In case you haven't already guessed, sometimes that favorite crashes and burns.That was the case for all of these bowl game upsets but just like some bowl games are more meaningful than others, some of these upsets are more memorable as well. Barkley received national attention and finished fourth in Heisman Trophy voting with 304 total votes and third in Maxwell Award voting. He also received multiple national and Big Ten Conference awards and recognition. During Barkley's three-year collegiate career, he broke and set numerous Penn State records including most rushing touchdowns in a career, most rushing yards by a freshman and sophomore as well as most total yards in a single game. He played college football at Stanford, and was drafted by the Panthers with the eighth overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. As a sophomore in 2015, McCaffrey was the AP College Football Player of the Year and the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy. He holds the NCAA record for most all-purpose yards in a season with 3,864. Melvin Gordon III (born April 13, 1993) is an American football running back for the Los Angeles Chargers of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Wisconsin, and was drafted by the Chargers in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft. Gordon briefly held the NCAA Division I FBS single-game rushing yards record with 408 yards, set playing in three quarters against Nebraska in November 2014, until it was broken the following week by Oklahoma Sooners running back Samaje Perine against Kansas with 427 yards. He became the second all-time single-season rusher in FBS history with 2,587 yards, falling 41 yards shy of Barry Sanders record of 2,628 yards set in 1988.

Dalvin James Cook (born August 10, 1995) is an American football running back for the Minnesota Vikings of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Florida State, where he finished his career as the school's all-time leading rusher. In 2016, Cook received an invitation to the NFL combine and completed all of the required combine drills and positional drills. He participated at Florida State's Pro Day and ran the 40-yard dash, 20-yard dash, 10-yard dash, and positional drills. He was ranked the top running back in the draft by Sports Illustrated and Pro Football Focus, the second best running back by NFL media analyst Bucky Brooks, and the third best running back by NFLDraftScout.com and NFL analyst Mike Mayock. Although he was considered to be one of the top running backs, off-the-field problems, prior arrests, character concerns, fumbling issues, and a history of shoulder injuries caused his stock to fall.

Leonard Joseph Fournette III is an American football running back for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at LSU, and was drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars with the fourth overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. Fournette was a consensus All-American following his sophomore season in 2015, after setting school single-season records with 1,953 rushing yards and 22 rushing touchdowns, and leading the country with 162.8 rushing yards per game, garnering comparisons to all-time great Herschel Walker. Fournette joined the Tigers with near-unprecedented hype in 2014 after an outstanding career at St. Augustine High School in New Orleans, winning the 2013 USA Today High School Football Offensive Player of the Year and being named the No. 1 overall recruit in 2014 senior class according to ESPN, 247Sports.com, and CBS Sports. Marcus Valentino Ingram Jr. (born December 21, 1989) is an American football running back for the Baltimore Ravens of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the University of Alabama, won the Heisman Trophy, and was a member of a national championship team. He was drafted by the New Orleans Saints in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft. 
During his sophomore college season in 2009, Ingram won the first Heisman Trophy ever awarded to an Alabama Crimson Tide player, set the Crimson Tide's single-season rushing record with 1,658 yards, was recognized as a unanimous All-American, and helped lead the Tide to an undefeated 14–0 season and the 2010 BCS National Championship. Since entering the NFL in 2011, Ingram has earned two Pro Bowl selections (2014 and 2017). In 2018, he received a four-game suspension after testing positive for performance enhancing drugs.

John Clay (born January 4, 1988) is a former American football running back. He was signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers as an undrafted free agent in 2011. He played college football for the University of Wisconsin–Madison. In high school, he received numerous awards for his accomplishments on the field at Washington Park High School in Racine, Wisconsin, being named to the Racine County Sports Hall of Fame in 2018, and was one of the most heavily recruited players in the country. Clay was ruled ineligible to play by the NCAA after not meeting Wisconsin admission requirements before being ruled eligible for the 2008 season.

Le'Veon Andrew Bell Sr. (/ˈleɪviɒn/ LAY-vee-on; born February 18, 1992) is an American football running back for the New York Jets of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Michigan State, and was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft. After a decent rookie season where he ran for over 800 yards, Bell broke out in his second season with the Steelers, totaling over 2,200 combined yards and made the Pro Bowl. Bell missed several games in the 2015 and 2016 seasons due to drug-related suspensions and injuries, but still put up solid numbers and was voted to the NFL Top 100 both times. In 2017, he had a league-high 321 carries for 1,291 yards, as well as 85 catches for 655 yards, and made the third Pro Bowl of his career. The next year, Bell refused to sign the franchise tag placed upon him by Pittsburgh, resulting in him sitting out the entire 2018 season. He signed with the Jets the following off-season.

Alvin Mentian Kamara (born July 25, 1995) is an American football running back for the New Orleans Saints of the National Football League (NFL). He played high school football for the Blue Devils football team. As a junior in 2011, he rushed for 1,300 yards with 17 touchdowns. As a senior in 2012, he rushed for 2,264 yards with 26 touchdowns, and he had 22 receptions for 286 yards and five touchdowns and led his high school to its first state championship. Following the conclusion of the 2016 college season, Kamara decided to forgo his redshirt senior season and enter the 2017 NFL Draft. In his two seasons as a Volunteer, he started in only eight of 24 games due to sharing the backfield with Jalen Hurd, but he amassed almost 2,000 yards from scrimmage and averaged a touchdown per game.

The 2010 season was a breakout one for James, as he rushed for 1,731 yards, the highest in the nation. He finished third in balloting for the Heisman Trophy that year and received the Doak Walker Award. In 2011, he became Oregon's career rushing leader and rushed for a school-record 1,805 yards. He was considered to be one of the top running backs throughout his college career, with his 5,082 total rushing yards placing him 2nd in Pac-12 Conference history and 14th in NCAA history. James was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft.

Considered the top running back prospect for the 2012 NFL Draft, Richardson was considered by some as the best running back prospect since Adrian Peterson, and was selected third overall by the Cleveland Browns. After being traded away from the Browns during his second season with the team, and out of the NFL after five seasons, he is sometimes considered one of the biggest draft busts in league history.

He is the only player in Southeastern Conference (SEC) history with three career games of 250 or more rushing yards. Guice was born in a poverty-stricken section in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, known as "the Bottom", to parents Derek and Beulah Guice on June 21, 1997. On May 3, 2003, Derek was killed after being involved in a fight at a Denny's restaurant that ended with him being shot, with Guice learning of it after seeing the scene on the news. As a way to deal with his emotions and not feeling safe at home, Guice focused his life around football, with his powerful running style being described as "running angry".

He played college football at Ohio State University as a Buckeye and was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft. Hyde grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio. Hyde enrolled at Ohio State in January 2010. Hyde played primarily as a backup running back in his first two seasons before breaking out in his junior season with 970 yards and 16 rushing touchdowns in less than 10 games after missing two because of an ankle issue. He was named second-team All-Big Ten that year.
