In the 1960's, there was nothing more totally tubular than the top '60s beach movies. These bodacious films were light and carefree, and cast a summery vibe over the silver screen. Classic hits, such as Beach Blanket Bingo and Bikini Beach were funny, musical romps through an infinite world of summer and sun.
Many 1960s beach movies fell under the subgenre of beach party movies. American International Pictures (AIP) originated the genre of beach party movies with their surprisingly popular 1963 offering, Beach Party. These movies focused on teenage protagonists, with adults typically only showing up as villains, buffoons, and sometimes both. Teenage themes such as dancing, drag racing, surfing, and summer love were all explored. In addition to musical beach movies and party beach movies, the horror beach movie genre was also extremely popular. In The Horror of Party Beach, half-human, half-fish zombies menace an East Coast shore town.
