Inspired by the changes they saw in the rest of the world, in the 1960s Bollywood movies became what was known as India’s own New Wave. Directors such as Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen and Ritwik Ghatak began to make films which told realistic stories of the common man and their films are well represented on this 60s Bollywood film list.
Prominent on this list of the best Bollywood films is Ray’s The Big City, Sen’s Bhuvan Shome, and Ghatak’s The Golden Threat. The 1960s also saw the end of Guru Dutt’s career. An icon of Indian cinema among his final films were Sanjh Aur Savera, Bahurani, and Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam.
